Vonn will make her PyeongChang debut with the Super-G event on Friday night and has the downhill and combined events next week.
When she crossed the line and a time of 1:21:11 flashed up on the screen, Ledecka just stared blankly before eventually turning, shaking her head and uttering an incredulous "No" into the camera. In snowboarding, though, she placed sixth in the parallel slalom and seventh in GS.
"She did a really good run and I want to congratulate her because the Olympics is so special and anything can happen".
Czech Republic's Ester Ledecka comes to grips with her unexpected gold medal.
Despite a delay of an hour because of high winds, the race got underway under bright blue skies with a big crowd packed into the stands at the Jeongseon Alpine Centre. A part-time ski racer, part-time snowboarder stunned the field to win a gold medal in the women's Olympic super-G by 0.01 seconds. The 23-year-old skater defended his Olympic gold from Sochi 2014, winning the men's singles figure skating by almost ten points ahead of teammate Shoma Unu.
Vonn has 135 world cup podium finishes total, two of them on the Jeongseon course a year ago. Her dominant sport is snowboarding. "I knew [Ledecka] is a really great skier because she has so many fast parts in the training, but she never put it all together".
"I watched clips here and there".
"That's why it's so hard to win at the Olympics", Vonn said. "It was just so frustrating". "I'm only good at one sport".
Hanyu was back on the ice competitively for the first time since injuring his right ankle last November.
"I think in the end, it made me a stronger person". "I have two more races left, so I hope those will go a little bit better".
She has already waited long enough - and ventured down a very bumpy course in the past eight years.
There are certain names that bring "rock-star-status" with them at the Winter Olympics. U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association CEO Tiger Shaw spoke with The Chronicle about Vonn and her relationship with fellow Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin, who also has two medals.
I've covered a number of cases here involving gender-bending questions in the world of sports, mostly because I find the subject endlessly fascinating. He will be watching from the best seat in the house, hopefully looking out for me and guiding me down the mountain.
"I told him, 'Yes, Yuzu, but only one can be champion".
The 22-year-old, favourite in the snowboard parallel slalom in a week's time, beat defending champion Anna Veith of Austria by one-hundredth of a second with Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather taking bronze. She is a three-time world championships medalist in super-G, most recently a bronze in 2015 when the world championships were held at Beaver Creek.
Of Vonn's 81 World Cup victories, 28 are in Super-G, including one earlier this season in Val d'Isere, France.
