Kim Jong-Un Invites South Korea's President To Summit Meeting

For them, the worldwide celebration of sports is also an affirmation of the vast economic progress South Korea has undergone in the last six decades.

It's worth noting the question now is the sincerity of Pyongyang's outreach.

How will the USA react?

President Donald Trump's administration has taken a hard line on North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programme, saying there is no room for negotiations unless Pyongyang abandons it.

Prior to the opening ceremony on Friday night, Pence arrived late to a dinner reception between the two Koreas and greeted everyone at a main table except for Kim Yong Nam, North Korea's nominal head of state, Reuters reports.

The rival countries did send representatives to the opening ceremonies, with US vice-president Mike Pence and North Korea's ceremonial leader Kim Yong Nam both in attendance.

Pence left an Indianapolis Colts game that he was attending a year ago minutes after the national anthem after players from the opposing San Francisco 49ers knelt in protest during the national anthem, a move that sparked criticism from NFL players and Democrats. Seoul had to seek a special United Nations exemption for Choe to spend three days in South Korea.

Roh Moo-hyun, a liberal South Korean president who carried on with Kim Dae-jung's engagement policy, crossed the border to the North to meet Kim Jong Il in 2007.

"I am open to any form of meeting, including a summit, if these are necessary to improve inter-Korean relations and resolve the North Korean nuclear issue", Moon told more than 200 reporters at the Blue House in January.

"And so when you put it that way they're not really participating in the Olympics".

Indeed, some spectators at Saturday's game were skeptical that bringing the two countries together on one team would have any lasting effect. There have been some such meetings in the past, but they are rare.

The story of the Winter Olympics so far has been the united front the two Korean countries have showed.

Ten other North Korean athletes will also be participating in the Winter Games under their own flags, including short-track speed skating, figure skating, alpine skating and cross-country skiing.

"We want to see President Moon become a protagonist in opening a new chapter for reunification and leave great footprints in history", she said.

She verbally conveyed Kim's invitation to Moon "to visit the North at his most convenient time", he added.

Ms Kim is thought to be about 30 years old, around four years younger than her brother.

Even after deciding to send its athletes, coaches and high-ranking officials to the Olympics in South Korea, North Korea continues to take provocative actions such as staging a huge military parade in Pyongyang on Thursday.

They sat alongside Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee.
