Elon Musk's Mom, 69, Is Still Stunning as an In-Demand Model

The SA-born entrepreneur successfully launched his new rocket called the Falcon Heavy from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday.

"I'm still trying to absorb everything that happened because it seemed surreal to me", Musk told reporters after the successful launch. Normally for a new rocket, they'd launch like a block of concrete or something.

Of course one can say that his projects work towards the greater good in that they could displace demand for fossil fuels, but via SpaceX he is promoting the idea that we can jump ship and move civilisation to Mars, which inevitably creates the ideological space to give up on demanding a habitable planet here.

The space agency is also in an ever-present budget pinch - and behind schedule in building its own super-heavy-lift rocket, called Space Launch System.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wants a new space race, and it's hard to argue with his reasoning. "I have 30 years of experience in the business, billionaires have changed the game", said Sowers, the former chief scientist for United Launch Alliance, a Boeing and Lockheed Martin joint venture and SpaceX competitor.

SpaceX also planned to land the Falcon Heavy's center booster on a droneship out at sea, but the live feed of the platform cut out before the rocket came into view.

Musk posted a video of the auto on Twitter after launch, in which he can be heard laughing in the background as a camera behind the mannequin's head shows the vehicle apparently in orbit around Earth.

On board the rocket that's now headed deeper into space is Musk's personal Tesla roadster.

"It didn't have enough propellant", said Mr Musk, adding that it plunged into the ocean about 100m away from its landing point. The photo shows the Starman space suit sitting behind the wheel of the electric vehicle, with a crescent of the Earth in the background.

And now, many people who have put down refundable $1,000 deposits on the vehicle are being told their delivery will take place later than previously stated, according to new reports.

Tuesday's success marked a huge step forward for a company that's already managed to shake up the rocket industry with its groundbreaking technology.

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket, now the most powerful launch system on Earth, roared into the sky on Tuesday afternoon atop a pillar of smoke. Technically they didn't make "two" big bangs, they made six bangs, because each booster assembly breaks the sound barrier when it's coming back to Earth in triplicate. Only the Saturn V moon rocket, last flown in 1973, delivered more payload to orbit.

The Heavy became the most powerful rocket flying with Tuesday's inaugural test flight, reports CNBC.
