Detroit Auto Show: Hyundai Reveals All New Veloster

When the Veloster was first introduced in 2011, it was perceived as a bit of a gimmick, a trendy vehicle with amusing little doors on one side.

"The Veloster N features a boy racer-baiting exterior, complete with a spoiler, diffuser, colored door sills and rockers, and optional 19" wheels, on which 235/35R19 Pirelli P-Zero tires are mounted.

Through premier partnerships across the automotive industry, Forza games feature the world's greatest cars, including "First in Forza" debuts such as the McLaren P1, Ferrari La Ferrari, Ford GT, Lamborghini Centenario and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. "It's got a really wide aggressive stance", Evanoff says.

To help it stand out from the other Veloster models, the Veloster N gets a unique front fascia with a sportier grille and large front air ducts. The liftgate's handle is now relocated higher up, near the wiper, so it's easier to grab. The second-generation Veloster is asymmetrical.

The performance model also comes with a bespoke suspension setup featuring something called "N Power Sense Axle" for the front end.

"The powertrain side we will pretty much stick to the normal line up, but everything else [will change]", he said - except the brakes, however, which Biermann claims is not necessary.

Two engines will be available, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder making 110kW at 6200rpm and 179Nm of torque at 4500rpm, this will be mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic.

As a refresher, the 2019 Veloster will be available with three engines that have outputs ranging from 147 hp (109 kW) to 275 hp (205 kW).

The Turbo model meanwhile, is fitted with an unchanged 1.6 litre turbocharged four-pot producing 201 hp at 6,000 rpm and 264 Nm from 1,500 to 4,500 rpm - an overboost function brings peak torque to 274 Nm. (264 Nm) of torque. There are red accents aplenty, and yes, you can - and should - spec it in Performance Blue.

The Veloster N should be much better to drive than the old Veloster Turbo.

The Hyundai gets a short-throw, close-ratio six speed manual transmission with downshift rev-matching, and a sport exhaust system which allows for some over-run crackle during upshifts and downshifts.

A heads-up display is also available, which further improves the Veloster's tech-driven and sporty character.

Dimensionally the new Veloster hews closely to the outgoing model, with just slight increases in wheelbase, overall length and width. LED taillamps are an option, as is a darkened roof.

All regular Veloster models get AEB as standard while options include lane-keep assist, high-beam assist and driver attention warning. Optional will be blind spot warning, backup sensors with cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control. The latter two should be helpful to those owners who complained about the first-gen car's poor rear visibility, Evanoff says. Is it time for the Veloster N? Hyundai vehicles are sold and serviced through more than 830 dealerships nationwide, and the majority sold in the USA are built at US manufacturing facilities, including Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama.
