Rampant Roy rewrites England record-books

The South Africa-born Roy was dominant from the start of the chase and surpassed Alex Hales' record of 171 - against Pakistan at Nottingham in 2016 - as the highest ever ODI score for England.

England have beaten Australia in the One Day International in Melbourne.

Morgan's choice was vindicated early on as Mark Wood, returning to the side after injury, removed the risky David Warner for two early on.

Roy survived being given out and several close calls before eventually being caught for 180 to help guide his side to a five-wicket success to kick-off the five-match series in winning fashion. When Travis Head was out for 5 to the last ball of the 14th over, Australia was in trouble at 78-3.

Finch, who hit 10 fours and three sixes in his 107, and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh then gave Australia a platform to build on with a stand of 118.

The Australian team knew that the ODI series will bring a tougher challenge.

The most runs made by any batsman in a run-chase outside Asia.

Australia got two wickets, but it didn't halt Roy.

But the Steve Smith-led side slumped to a shocking five-wicket defeat against England despite the home side compiling up a competitive total of 304-8 in the first ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

"That works for them and that's something that we might have to think about as well, having guys that are going really hard and having someone - it might be me - that just bats normally". England had 60 runs in six overs.

Roy lifts heis bat after scoring a century to the delight of teammate Joe Root.

Adam Zampa thought he had the breakthrough when he had Roy given out lbw on 91, but the on field decision was overturned on review.

Root also looked good at the crease as he cruised to another half-century as the pair put on a double century partnership for the third wicket. Although Jason Roy was dropped recently, he was encouraged to be his attack-minded self when recalled in September and has responded with scores of 84, 96 and 180.

Speaking about his innings, Roy said, "It was an absolute honour to be out there on the MCG and to get a score like that, to win our first game of the series is incredibly special".

In the 42nd over, Roy was dismissed by Starc.

Jos Buttler - 2/10 - Like Morgan, Buttler could not finish the innings as he made just 4 runs.
