Jon Gruden and company reload

Gruden was introduced Tuesday in front of a large crowd that included almost 50 former Raiders and nine Pro Football Hall of Famers as the coach that owner Mark Davis believes can carry Derek Carr and the Raiders back to the top.

Questions about Gruden's "control" should be answered tomorrow when the Raiders introduce Gruden at team headquarters in Alameda. Unless the team is highly successful the next two seasons, it's hard to imagine the Gruden name being enough to sell the Raiders the way Davis clearly hopes to in Vegas. That was the game that did him in, causing Davis to trade Gruden to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for four draft picks and cash.

Of course, as Williamson noted, a return to coaching is also possible for Oakland's former head coach. The Raiders were staying in Sarasota, Fla., between games at Buffalo and Miami, and Davis went to seek counsel on how to fix a once-promising season gone awry.

Well, you might say "but, he's won a Super Bowl!".

"Coach Gruden's coming into a good situation", Penn told NFL Network on Monday. There was no leadership.

Gruden makes it seem like Davis was the only one flirting for most of those years. "I'm all in. This is something that I feel deeply and strongly about and I'm going to do everything I can to ... put the Raiders back on track". That doesn't mean that he still wasn't studying the game. He's still a brilliant mind with lots of knowledge.

He spent the last eight years working as an announcer on "Monday Night Football" for ESPN. I've felt, as I said, for six years that Jon Gruden is the person I want to lead this team.

"I've never met Marshawn Lynch, even as a broadcaster", Gruden said.

Davis now has his man in Gruden, and wants this pact to work in the short and long term. It doesn't affect the cap and it's not our money. Shell went 2-14 that season and was sacked after one year.

PUTTING IT IN CONTEXT: ESPN's Chris Mortensen referred to Gruden's contract and said, "Some people say, '$100 million, 10 years". Gannon became a Pro Bowler, and though he ultimately went on to win his lone MVP the year Gruden was traded to Tampa Bay, he credited his former coach with much of his success.

Will we see Derek Carr use his athleticism, throwing on the move? He's healthy now. He's I think been in a lot of different systems - he's played for a number of different [coaches] or has not [had] a lot of continuity around him that way.

Gruden said he has hired an offensive coordinator (Greg Olson), a defensive coordinator (Paul Guenther) and a special-teams coordinator (Rich Bisaccia). "He's been a great coach to us". It'll be interesting to see who else he attracts.

No one used the G-word in regard to Carr this season, when the Raiders were 6-10 and their $125 million leader regressed from the 2016 campaign that earned him such lifetime security.
