USA to announce repeal of clean power plan

Environmentalists and advocacy groups have vowed to fight the Environment Protection Agency's, or EPA, latest decision to repeal the Clean Power Plan.

Through the Clean Power Plan, former President Barack Obama sought to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from existing power plants. Now, each state had its own target. The initiative helped cut emissions to 79.2 million tons previous year and are on course to reach 2030 target.

The Clean Air Act - under section 111 (d) - creates a partnership between EPA, states, tribes and US territories - with EPA setting a goal and states and tribes choosing how they will meet it. But he said market forces were already moving utilities away from coal. "Things change. Economies change", Boldman said.

"It will cause Pennsylvania in my view to miss out on a lot of economic growth by not advancing more aggressive policies around renewable energy", Quigley said. And coal will also be lifting developing countries out of energy poverty.

"The plans that TVA has implemented and has in place actually predate the Clean Power Plan", TVA spokesman Jim Hopson said Monday.

SIEGEL: So the Trump administration is set to withdraw the Clean Power Plan. Pruitt was among about two dozen attorneys general who sued to stop Obama's 2014 push to limit carbon emissions, stymieing the restrictions from ever taking effect. "And that is wrong". The store's owners have been forced to lay off about 60 percent of its workers in recent years. Those numbers are dwarfed by the jobs created by building clean power infrastructure such as wind turbines and solar arrays. Twenty-seven states joined the challenge, which is still pending.

"The Trump administration's persistent and indefensible denial of climate change and their continued assault on actions essential to stemming its increasing devastation is reprehensible", Schneiderman said.

The state's largest coal industry trade group praised the announcement, saying it would protect coal jobs in the state.

"With this news, Donald Trump and Scott Pruitt will go down in infamy for launching one of the most egregious attacks ever on public health", Sierra Club executive director Michael Brune said. This would ensure continued affordable, reliable power in the US and aid the proliferation of smarter, cleaner plants overseas. Under the plan, gas would have been the leading source of electricity in the U.S. As Benjamin Zycher of the American Enterprise Institute points out, the Obama administration's Climate Action Plan (which includes the Clean Power Plan) would reduce the global temperature by 15 one-thousandths of a degree by 2100.

The effects of repealing the plan altogether are unclear, in large part because some big states, like California and NY, are already moving full speed ahead to hit or exceed the target laid out by the initiative.

He is also a climate change sceptic and said earlier this year that he believed carbon dioxide was not a primary contributor to global warming.

In June, Trump announced that the USA would pull out of the Paris Accord, an worldwide agreement that set a limit on greenhouse gas emissions. They said the EPA had overstepped its bounds.

"That's what we're really looking for, is flexibility so they can meet their individual consumers' needs", Matheson said Monday.

Pruitt says before President Trump was elected, there was not much hope for those in the agriculture community.
