Walton has 428 rushing yards and three touchdowns in four games this season, ranking third in the Atlantic Coast Conference with 107 rushing yards per game.
The Hurricanes emerged from September with a formidable defense that limited Duke to three trips to the red zone and six points, a fine quarterback in Malik Rosier and an electrifying running back in Mark Walton, who is expected to play Saturday despite aggravating a left ankle injury against the Blue Devils. The Hurricanes (4-0, 1-0) dropped the Seminoles (1-3, 1-2) out of the College Football Playoff hunt in the process, and opened the door for larger conversations later - and a few statements we can make right now.
The loss marked Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher's first defeat against Miami since he took over the program in 2010.
Following the victory, a handful of Hurricanes players went to midfield and begin pretending to dig up the field at the midfield logo.
For Miami to confidently take aim at ending a division title drought, it had to first end its rivalry drought with the Seminoles. Otherwise, there is a chance he has played his last game for the Miami Hurricanes.
Miami now turns to sophomore Travis Homer to lead the ground game.
The Miami product arrived as a 4-star recruit, choosing to stay in-state during the 2015 recruiting cycle.
He needed it. Rosier hadn't been sharp all day; his stat line finishes at 19-44 for 254 yards and three touchdowns and an interception. That's the good news on that type of deal, but I don't know what we're going to do yet. Instead, Miami didn't even put a field goal in play.
Florida State freshman quarterback James Blackman played better in the second half as well.
Originally scheduled for September 16 but postponed due to Hurricane Irma, Miami and Florida State are gearing up for their annual instate showdown Saturday afternoon. The senior wideout has tallied a receiving touchdown in five consecutive games dating back to the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl victory over West Virginia, becoming the first Hurricanes to accomplish the feat since Leonard Hankerson in 2010. Rosier this season has 126-yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries.
Miami answered, Rosier throwing a 6-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Berrios to forge back ahead. However, Rosier led the Hurricanes down the field for 75-yard scoring drive to silence the home crowd.
Walton has been banged up the past couple of games with an ankle injury. Nor would the coach give an update on All-American receiver Ahmmon Richards, who missed most of fall camp and the first two games because of a severe hamstring pull and "was struggling with his hammy, " Richt said Saturday night.
