United Blood Services: Blood needs in Las Vegas are met for now

Michigan Blood in Saginaw mainly supplies locally and the Red Cross helps across the country.

"It's really yesterday's blood donors that are todays heroes", said Director for the Regional Blood Center Jennifer Rhamy. "Donors are turning out and want to do something immediate to help out with this situation, which is understandable and fantastic".

Blood products have a limited shelf life - 42 days for red blood cells and just 5 days for platelets and must therefore be constantly replenished. With reports of over 500 injured, we are told no donation is too small. Blood and blood products have an expiration date. He said he does it simply because he has blood other people need. It can take 24 to 36 hours to collect, test, process and distribute blood where it's needed.

"Whether it's some kind of tragedy like Las Vegas or somebody getting sick or injured here in the local area they need the blood".

We'll be at Folsom Lake College this Wednesday from 10am - noon supporting BloodSource's blood drive, so please stop by and help support the relief effort.

Red Cross officials were reluctant to give an estimate about how many units had been donated from how many people so far due to the fact that it is constantly changing.

Blood donors must be at least 16 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good health.

In the days following the tragedy, the community showed an incredible outpouring of support.

"More than ever it's super important to be here", said Donna Designs, Orcutt resident.

Donors should also bring identification with a photograph, like a driver's license or state-issued identification card.

"That just really highlights the need for having blood on our shelves, all throughout the country, so that we can respond to situations within 24 hours or nearly immediately", said Red Cross Regional Chief Operating Officer Scott Aminov.
