Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder J.D. Martinez walks through the dugout as he gets ready for batting practice Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, at Chase Field in Phoenix as the team prepared for a National League wild-card playoff baseball game against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. The Rockies were down three runs before they got an out, they almost made up a six-run deficit, and they were all but sunk when the Diamondbacks' best relief pitcher slugged the first extra-base hit of his career.
In addition to the game's starter Zack Greinke, left-hander Robbie Ray, a 15-game victor, will be in the Arizona bullpen along with fellow starters lefty Patrick Corbin and right-hander Zack Godley.
For Greinke, signed to a six-year deal during last year's offseason, he says he's ready to go and feeling good heading into Wednesday's game: "I feel good going into it". Greinke has a 13-1 record with a 2.87 ERA in 18 home starts this year, covering 116 innings. On the Rockies side, expect a big game from Carlos Gonzalez, who is hitting.333 off of Greinke in his career with 5 home runs.
The Diamondbacks have Fernando Rodney, who's 40 years old with 300 career saves and three years of postseason experience. In those matchups dating to 2012, Verlander was 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA; Sale was 0-2 with a 2.78 ERA.
If you want to watch the game tonight and have a cable subscription, just tune in to TBS at 8 PM ET. "It really just comes down to just doing it".
On the night after the Twins and Yankees played one of the most electric first innings in recent memory, Paul Goldschmidt kept the first-inning party going by hitting a three-run bomb to give the Diamondbacks a 3-0 lead over the Rockies. For one thing, the Major League Baseball regular season is much, much longer than those for the NFL or college basketball - 162 games versus sixteen and a maximum of 31, respectively.
Obviously, all of those regular-season wins are for naught if a team can't advance past the divisional round. However, Goldschmidt has yet to get a hit off Gray in just 11 at-bats. It's who's better in that five-game series. He was acquired in part to combat all the left-handers in the Dodgers' rotation. 1-5 hitters in this Arizona lineup are about as good as there is.
"That was a insane game from the beginning all the way to the end", outfielder Carlos Gonzalez said.
They are two of the best players in the game, they are both MVP candidates, and they are playing in the postseason for the first time.
In the Colorado fourth inning, Gonzalez, Story and Parra singled for one run.
Most of all, Arizona's home field advantage is a clear benefit to a club who has had so much success at Chase Field. "We know them, and they know us".
Here are my top five somewhat bold predictions for the events of the N.L. Wild Card game.
What does the season series tell us?
The two teams share a spring training facility and faced each other 19 times during the regular season, with Arizona winning 11 of the 19 games.
The Dodgers have losing records against both the Rockies and Diamondbacks this season. We're one Diamondbacks win away from that being the case.
