This time Troy held on for the upset victory.
Not only did LSU experience a humiliating loss on Saturday, but they paid almost $1 million for the displeasure of suffering the defeat.
It marked Troy's second win over a ranked opponent since the school moved to the FBS in 2001. The Trojans, a Division II power in the 1980s with national championships in 1984 and 1987, defeated No. 17 Missouri at Troy, 24-14, in their first year in the Sun Belt. That's because folks will be talking about LSU AD Joe Alleva's role in moving last season's matchup between the two from Gainesville to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Matthew postponed the scheduled meeting.
And Troy never trailed. Six times when the Trojans needed 1 or 2 yards on third down, Chunn's number was called; he delivered every time but one and he followed that time up by plowing into the end zone on fourth and goal.
Still later, in the elevator lobby the hollowed-out stadium, Jones' voice rang out from his post-game radio show, and a coach often lampooned for his comments said: "We're being tested right now. We've got to keep taking steps forward". "They're hurting. We've got to do some soul-searching". "We've got some good D-linemen". Brown wasn't certain his team was going to win Saturday night, but he knew they would play well.
Troy scored quickly in the 3rd quarter as Jordan Chunn scored on a one-yard touchdown run to make it 17-0.
Former LSU defensive lineman and current ESPN analyst Booger McFarland didn't mince words Sunday morning when analyzing the Tigers' problems in just 139 characters.
Troy 7, LSU 0 (Q2, 6:25): Troy comes up empty after a 13-play drive that chewed up 6:38 of clock time. Freshman quarterback Myles Brennan, who played in the second half before Elting's return, was 4-for-7 with a touchdown and an interception. And based on his two fourth-quarter drives Saturday, Etling leads LSU to a victory over Troy. He found wide receiver Russell Gage for a 34-yard touchdown pass with 7:41 to play in the game, cutting Troy's lead to 24-14.
Louisville 55, Murray State 10: Lamar Jackson had a short but productive day, throwing for 249 yards and three touchdowns, playing just more than a half and No. 17 Louisville routed Murray State.
Emanuel Thompson #8 of the Troy Trojans avoids a tackle by Kevin Toliver II #2 of the LSU Tigers at Tiger Stadium on September 30, 2017 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
With only 18 seconds remaining from his 9-yard line, Etling connected with Chark for 27 yards with 11 seconds to play. Etling left the game after getting hit on the previous play. The Trojans also lost in 2004 on a late touchdown.
Troy 24, LSU 14 (Q4, 5:26): LSU linebacker Michael Divinity recovers a Troy fumble at the Tigers' 8-yard line.
Hamilton teamed with quarterback Trace McSorley on the first two scoring passes and caught the third from running back Saquon Barkley to cap the scoring in the fourth quarter. "Darrel Williams should've got it". Another time at Ohio State, Florida State, Tennessee, and I can go down the list where we've had opportunities. "We had a win when I was back at Texas Tech in 2010, we ended Oklahoma's home winning streak".
Stidham, who started his career at Baylor, completed 13 of 16 attempts for 264 yards while Kerryon Johnson finished with 116 rushing yards on 23 carries for the Tigers (4-1, 2-0 SEC).
