Vettel's Engine Quits, Hamilton On Pole — Malaysia Qualifying

Overall it was a remarkable fightback from Mercedes, who were more than a second off the pace in practice on Friday and still 0.5secs off in the final session on Saturday.

"It's very bitter, but this is motor racing", Vettel said after qualifying after watching championship leader Lewis Hamilton beat Raikkonen to pole position.

The FIA stewards at Sepang gave Haas special permission to repair Grosjean's car due to the unusual nature of the incident.

Under F1 rules, the first time a fifth element is introduced, a 10-place grid penalty is applied while a five-place demotion is handed out when a fifth of any of the remaining elements is used.

Vettel is also already on his fourth control electronics while he is on his third MGU-H, MGU-K, and energy store. "That's what I've always enjoyed".

Hamilton enters Sunday's race 28 points ahead of Vettel.

What happened last time out?

I have very little power.

Today's Grand Prix will be the 19th and last at steamy Sepang.

Valtteri Bottas says Mercedes' latest aero upgrade package may have disrupted the handling of its W08 Silver Arrows. We had quite limited running because of the rain in the morning.

Yes it was a difficult day but our guys are phenomenal in fixing problems. It's only Friday, usually the day when you spend time trying various things on the car.

Meanwhile, Force India's Esteban Ocon put in a good show at the Sepang to qualify sixth. The Finn went hard in Q3, and just missed pole position by 0.045 seconds on his final run.

The German outfit installed new aerodynamic components on its car in Malaysia, with changes centered around the W08's nose and the bodywork ahead of its sidepods.

He also swapped gloves several times, so was perhaps evaluating different designs of seam to help improve the feel from his fingers. After clinching the pole, a buoyant British driver said, "The engineers did such a good job".

"At some point in the near future it will be the time to discuss it". I don't really know where it came from. "It makes sense - let's see what we have and we'll see what we put", he added. "But we go tomorrow".

The issue caught Ferrari by surprise as the engine had run without problem on the dyno in Maranello prior to being shipped to Malaysia.

Racing really gives me more pleasure than ever. Over the course of qualifying he managed to lower that to a new track record of 1:30.067 and in the process took his eighth pole position of the season. Behind Raikkonen at the start of the Malaysian Grand Prix will feature two of the pilot "Red bull" - Verstappen and Ricardo.

"It will be a tough challenge tomorrow - but we will approach it with the mind-set of maximising our potential and taking the opportunities that present themselves".
