Dozens killed in rush hour stampede at Mumbai train station

The eyewitness stated that he heard people screaming that the bridge was collapsing. Railway officials, police and fire brigade reached the site to carry out rescue operations.

A railway official said a 12-meter wide foot overbridge was sanctioned to connect the platform with the adjoining Parel station - which had an opening to a road on one side.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal who was in Mumbai today, visited the KEM hospital and spoke to doctors about the treatment of the injured. In the meeting, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced that additional escalators would be constructed at all railway stations with high traffic.

The meeting was held at the Western Railway's headquarters at Churchgate.

The focus will be on the delay on rail infra projects in city and the present requirements.

"Some of the injured are in serious condition", Deepak Sawant, the health minister of Maharashtra, had said at KEM hospital where the injured were taken.

The incident took place around 10.15 hrs in the morning.

It is estimated over 6 million people ride the train every day in the metropolitan area, and at rush hour train carriages often carry triple the number of passengers for which they were designed.

The bridge was reportedly more crowded than usual at the time of the stampede as some people were seeking shelter from a downpour under the bridge's canopy.

Thackeray told media, "Until the present infrastructure of the local railways is made better, not a single brick will be allowed to be placed for a bullet train in Mumbai".

An Indian Railway Accident Relief Medical Equipment Train was rushed to the accident spot and began providing immediate medical assistance.

However, Western Railway officials announed that funds were sanctioned by then Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu for the renovation of the Elphinstone Road station footbridge, but work hasn't started yet.
