Bucs journal: Game gets away when offense has slow start

The defense sacked Jameis Winston twice and intercepted him three times.

Keenum did his best Aaron Rodgers "R-E-L-A-X" interpretation by carving up the Bucs defense like Thanksgiving come early as Minnesota throttled Tampa Bay 34-17 on Sunday before 66,390 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

"It's fun when that guy's on the field", Keenum said.

With Keenum in at quarterback, this seems like a good game with which to make a little cash if one were so inclined.

Case Keenum has started the past two games in Bradford's place, going 1-1 in the starting role. "Tampa was one of the teams that needed a running back, but I was open-minded to everybody".

Bortles chose to throw four touchdowns in the game played in London. "He can wreck your game, just like coach said. and we've got to be ready for him".

When the Vikings drafted Cook in the second round, they dreamed of an all-purpose back with explosive-play speed, great vision, patience and the smarts to transition quickly into an National Football League offense.

Keenum's never had the kind of weapons he has in Minnesota before (not when Arian Foster got hurt minutes into his first Texans start in Kansas City).

They also managed to go the distance on the very next possession, marching 75 yards down the field before Winston chucked a lovely, 25-yard deep pass to DeSean Jackson to score.

The end zone interception on a pass to Mike Evans was a bad decision for Winston. Meanwhile, the offense couldn't sustain drives and was 1 of 6 on third downs. Stefon Diggs has produced like a superstar wideout when paired with a quality passer, and secondary weapons Adam Thielen and Kyle Rudolph gives the air game balance.

Keenum completed 25 for 33 passes for 369 yards, three touchdowns and no turnovers.

Later in the fourth quarter, Winston threw his third interception of the game. Mike Evans had 67 yards in seven catches while Chris Godwin added 44 yards in three catches. "To be able to do that early, and to be able to get points on the board right out of the gates, I think that helps everybody".

The 2017 Tampa Bay Buccaneers did an excellent job of maintaining their readiness to play in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Irma.

Cook, who joined Darrin Nelson, D.J. Dozier and Michael Bennett as the only rookie running backs to start a Vikings season opener, said he was open to playing anywhere and isn't out to make the Bucs regret not drafting him. The only year with Peterson that Minnesota had a 1,000-yard receiver was 2009, when quarterback Brett Favre showed up and threw for 4,202 yards, including 1,312 to Rice. Instead, every player and coach - joined by general manager Rick Spielman and co-owners Mark and Zygi Wilf - stood together on the sidelines and locked arms.

The Buccaneers will be playing without three prominent names on the defensive side.

James is a writer for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. DE Noah Spence, DE Robert Ayers and CB Vernon Hargreaves III all left at times and later returned.

In Bradford's absence last week, and again in Week 3 against Tampa Bay, Case Keenum will helm the ship for the Vikings, which isn't good for the team or its fantasy prospects.
