Trojans win an instant classic against Texas with field goal in 2OT

While quarterback Sam Darnold's late-game performance is sure to gain attention, USC's thrilling, overtime victory came down to defense. And it felt kind of like a big-time bowl game.

The stakes were not as high as the last time the two teams met, but the late-game drama was certainly close. It also may have pushed Trojans quarterback Sam Darnold to the front of the line of Heisman Trophy candidates.

"I'll probably do my fair share of looking around and enjoy the pageantry of playing a game against USC in the Coliseum", Herman said, "but beyond that it's just Game 3 on the schedule".

"I don't know if I've done it before", Darnold said.

The Trojans go on the road to face the Cal Golden Bears on Saturday at 12:30 PM PT. Especially if they truly desire be one of the four teams in the college football playoff at the end of this season.

No. 25 UCLA (2-0) at Memphis (1-0): The Bruins' résumé consists of a dramatic come-from-behind victory over Texas A&M followed by a convincing home win over Hawaii.

It starts with Darnold.

Ehlinger finished 21 of 42 for 298 yards and threw a touchdown pass of 3 yards to Cade Brewer in the first overtime. Darnold has thrown two interceptions in four of his last six games.

The USC Trojans have been a little shaky to start the season, but the offensive production is showing signs of returning to what it was late last season and there's still room to improve with Darnold cutting back on his turnovers.

Scott, who spoke with reporters at halftime of USC's game against Texas, called it a "nice tradition". He leads Texas in scoring with two interception returns for touchdowns and another score on a blocked kick return. Darnold is cut from the same cloth.

ABOUT TEXAS (1-1): Look for the Longhorns to try and put together some long drives and keep USC's offense off the field as long as possible.

Darnold ended up completing 28 of 49 passes for 397 yards and three touchdowns.

That led to overtime, a score for the Trojans and an answering one for the Longhorns. McGrath also hit the game-tying 31-yarder as time expired in regulation to send the game to overtime. With the Trojans deep in Texas territory facing third and two, Darnold scrambled outside the pocket to his right and launched a 15 yard pass to junior wide receiver Deontay Burnett, who made a leaping grab in the back edge of the end zone. For the second time in three weeks, USC ended up on the right side of the rollercoaster ride, but if they don't iron out some of the wrinkles in between the first and fourth quarters, they could go off the track that leads to a Pac-12 championship.

Defensively, USC was great.

USC almost got into the endzone on the ensuing drive, but had to settle for a field goal after multiple unsuccessful attempts for a touchdown.

Ehlinger and the Longhorn offense faced a 14-10 deficit with 5:14 remaining in the fourth quarter. But watching the game, and from the sounds of things at the Coliseum, this felt like a big game. San Diego State has the city to itself after the NFL's Chargers bolted up the freeway to play in a 27,000-seat soccer stadium in a Los Angeles suburb.

The game was truly measured by defense, penalties, 4 downs, overtime heroics that had a recipe for a classic. Other than USC providing a big target for the Longhorns. The Tigers are just happy to finally be back to football after an open date with Hurricane Irma canceling last week's game at Central Florida.
