'The Handsmaid's Tale,' 'Big Little Lies' Dominate at 2017 Emmy Awards

And it wasn't just the winners who provided shocking moments. And the first award has already been announced.

You can see the full list of Emmy Award winners here.

Here is a partial group shot of the 2017 acting nominees. But the biggest dig came at the expense the Trump administration.

The former White House press secretary made fun of his infamous inauguration crowd speech during the show's opening.

At that point, Spicer wheeled a podium onto the Los Angeles stage.

Veep's Anna Chlumsky couldn't handle it. "Melissa McCarthy everybody, give it up" Colbert quipped.

Pointing out Robert DeNiro in the audience, he noted that the actor had been nominated for his role in the HBO movie "Wizard of Lies" (about Bernard Madoff).

A "standing ovation" also took place when trio Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin arrived on stage to music of ir cult film of 1980s, " How to get rid of his boss".

On the politically-charged night which saw Donald Trump a repeated target of criticism, the Armando Iannucci-created satire Veep was also a victor with two awards including best comedy.

"We shone a light on domestic abuse".

"Of course, what really mattered to Donald Trump is ratings", he said.

A gleefully flabbergasted Elisabeth Moss, who had won Outstanding Lead Actress one award prior, was first onstage to hug presenter Oprah Winfrey.

In the competition, several high-profile series failed to live up to expectations, including Westworld and Stranger Things, which both went home empty-handed. Nicole Kidman took home an award for best actress for her work on BLL and THT took home the hardware for outstanding drama.

"We're so excited, so thrilled", said Dern after winning her award. Baldwin spoke directly to Trump, who has complained in the past that he was cheated out of a trophy for hosting "Celebrity Apprentice": "I suppose I should say, 'At long last, Mr. President, here is your Emmy'". That's why, in retrospect, its outstanding drama win was practically inevitable.

It took 69 years, but we finally got an interview with Emmy herself (who knew she had such a strong resemblance to Outstanding Host of a Reality Program victor Ru Paul?). Hulu (with 18 nominations) has now beat Netflix and Amazon as the first streamer to win an Emmy for drama series. But apparently voters were not swayed by the fact that Kelley wrote the entire juicy limited series. "Black Mirror: San Junipero" was named best TV movie. In his brief acceptance speech, Brooker noted that he was as surprised as the rest of us. "I'm going to go with..." The series itself has received award for best comedy. It may not have been this Emmys' winningest TV series (winning one fewer than Saturday Night Live, when Creative Arts awards are factored in), but it's clearly gained a lot of favor among voters and momentum is on its side.

Television's glittering Emmys placed politics front and centre on Sunday, lavishing "The Handmaid's Tale" with awards for its bleak portrait of an authoritarian America.
