Happy Birthday Deshaun: Houston Texans QB Watson delivers in 1st National Football League start

"To say that Dalton and the offense were ineffective on Sunday afternoon would be kind".

The Houston Texans had a bit of a scare on Thursday night when starting cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph and Kevin Johnson left the game and didn't return after each player suffered an injury. Geno Atkins was routinely in Watson's face, even as the Texans often kept extra blockers in for protection.

Cincinnati would get their first down at the end of the first quarter when quarterback Andy Dalton hit AJ Green for 50-yards down to Houston's 14-yard line.

Houston Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson's 49-yard touchdown scamper is the longest run by a quarterback in Texans franchise history and represents the longest run by a quarterback in National Football League history in a starting debut. Coach Marvin Lewis said after the game it was not medical related without elaborating. But given just how bad both the Texans and Bengals were in their matchups, that doesn't seem particularly likely.

"I don't really get nervous", Watson said.

It's quite rare when memes focus on the awfulness of an entire event and not just one team, but despite Andy Dalton and the Cincinnati Bengals looking awful against the Houston Texans, the whole Thursday Night Football experience deserved to be criticized.

The quarterback carousel in Houston is nothing new - wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has now caught passes from 10 quarterbacks in the five years he has been with the Texans - and the Texans are hoping that drafting Watson will be their first ever franchise quarterback. Per CBS Sports, this was the first time the Bengals have been shut out in a season opener since 1979, and the first time in their history they were shutout in a home opener. "I have to put this one behind us", acknowledged Dalton. He threw only 15 interceptions in the last two seasons combined and had the second 4,200-yard season of his career in 2016.

"He's got good poise", O'Brien said. Deshaun Watson finished 12-of-23 for the game, throwing for 102 yards, a touchdown and an interception. If Dalton has no time to throw, he could struggle again. "I mean, this kid's going to get better and better and better the more he plays".

He completed 62.5 percent of his passes for 125 yards, and scored the only offensive touchdown on the night with a 49 yard run. The teams didn't meet in 2006 or 2007, but the Texans had their biggest win over their AFC rivals in 2008 in a 35-6 victory in Houston.
