Nadal keeps his part of the bargain at US Open

At last year's Open, Federer was home in Switzerland, rehabbing from knee surgery, while Nadal got bounced out unceremoniously in the fourth round by obscure Frenchmen Lucas Pouille.

Federer had already won the French Open, to complete the career Grand Slam in 2009, before going onto to win a sixth Wimbledon.

37 — Venus Williams' age, making her the oldest women's semifinalist at the U.S. Open in the Open era, which began in 1968.

Meanwhile, the 19-year-old Rublev was a 7-5, 7-6 (5), 6-3 upset victor over ninth-seeded David Goffin of Belgium in a two-hour, five-minute match.

The men's quarterfinals include top-seed Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer, along with American Sam Querrey (No. 17). He has made spectacular progress this year, breaking into the world's top 100 in June and the top 50 the following month after winning his first senior title in Croatia.

He will have high hopes this year in NY and all eyes are set on a first Federer-Nadal meeting at the US Open, which will turn into reality if both win their quarterfinals.

He pushed it to 5-5 by holding serve for much of the set, but just like the first, all it took was one break from the five-time U.S. Open champion to clinch the set.

Rublev grew up worshipping Nadal, to the point that he even dressed like Rafa, buying every new Nike outfit Nadal wore. He was impressive, however, in his straight-sets victory over Serbia's Dusan Lajovic in the first round.

Though Dolgopolov is unseeded, he had won two of the last three meetings with Nadal. Nadal netted a backhand on his first match point, but on the second it was Rublev's turn to miss as the world No 1 completed his victory in just 97 minutes.

But there is no quibbling with Vandeweghe's results in the Grand Slam tournaments.

The top-seeded woman had even less trouble than Nadal did Monday: 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova beat 91st-ranked American Jennifer Brady 6-1, 6-0.

The comeback was seemingly coming to an end in the fourth set, but Thiem failed to serve out for the match at 5-4 before Del Potro saved two match points with a pair of aces.

But Vandeweghe holds a 2-1 edge in head-to-head matches with Pliskova.

Nadal got to the round of eight in NY for the first time since his 2013 title, overwhelming 64th-ranked Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.

"It's odd we never played here, " Nadal said in his post-match on-court interview. She dropped the first set and had to fight off a match point in the second before rallying to beat No. 27 Zhang Shuai 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Roger Federer is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open, after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Federer faces Juan Martine del Potro, who is playing inspired tennis and played the match of his life against Dominic Thiem on Monday. Svitolina meets No. 15 seed Madison Keys in the nightcap. There was a chance for a clean sweep, because No. 15 Madison Keys of the US faced 418th-ranked Kaia Kanepi of Estonia on Wednesday night.
