Liverpool confirm Oxlade-Chamberlain signing

Six years into his Arsenal career, Oxlade-Chamberlain still didn't have a well-defined position and rarely had a regular starting job until Wenger discovered - nearly by accident - that he was quite good as a right wing-back.

Liverpool have confirmed the capture of midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from Arsenal for a fee thought to be in the region of £35 million.

The 11pm deadline came and went but, fortunately for Antonio Conte, Chelsea made good use of the deal sheet which granted clubs a two-hour extension to finalise deals. "I think he had many options".

He added: "If you had said to me six months ago that you'd get £40m for Oxlade-Chamberlain, you'd snap your hand off - you'd say it's a brilliant deal [for Arsenal]".

Arsenal allegedly offered Oxlade-Chamberlain up to £180,000 a week in a new contact, but it was turned down.

"I know my choice might come as a surprise to many", he said in a personal statement on Twitter, ". but I feel that this move is right for the next stage in my ongoing development".

Chelsea had seemingly moved into pole position to land the former Southampton youngster after agreeing their own deal with Arsenal.

Having made nearly 200 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners, scoring 20 goals in the process, many of his ex-teammates have taken to social media and wished the England global well for the future.

Without a Premier League title in 13 years and absent from the Champions League this season following last term's fifth-place finish, Arsenal are no longer a marquee destination for the sport's top stars. But the player himself delayed the move and recently made it clear he would prefer to join Liverpool.

"Had some great memories over the years playing along side you and I wish you all the best with this new chapter in your life?#theOX#shaaambles".

The matter of Aurier being granted a work permit had been complicated as he was handed a suspended two-month prison sentence past year having been found guilty of assault.

He denied the charge and has appealed against the sentence, which since it is convertible usually results in community service.
