Barcelona, Real Madrid hold minute's silence for Las Ramblas victims

On Thursday evening, 14 people were killed and more than 100 others injured when a white van ploughed into a crowd in central Barcelona.

Some eight hours later in Cambrils, a city 120 kilometres south of Barcelona, an Audi A3 auto hit pedestrians, injuring six civilians-one of them in a critical condition-and one police officer, said the government of the Spanish region of Catalonia where both cities are located. The claims are yet to be verified.

A judicial source said investigators believed a cell of at least eight people, possibly 12, may have been involved in the Barcelona attack and Cambrils plot and that it was planning to use gas canisters.

On Friday morning, emergency services updated the death toll to 14, announcing that one woman had died after terrorists struck pedestrians in the coastal town of Cambrils in the early hours of the morning. In all, six people, including a police officer, were injured in the Cambrils incident.

It comes after the secretary general of the Spanish Bishops Conference, Bishop Jose Gil Tamayo, released a statement on Twitter saying: 'We follow with concern and prayers the situation of victims of the mass trampling in Las Ramblas.

Police said they killed five "suspected terrorists" during the night in Cambrils, 120 kilometers south of Barcelona where by-standers and police were targeted in a second auto attack.

Police are searching for Driss Oukabir's brother Moussa, but it was not known whether he was the latest person arrested. The police killed the five attackers.

The police and officials in Barcelona are moving on with the investigation quickly.

Alcanar is located about 124 miles from Barcelona and 56 miles from Cambrils.

He added: "Barcelona has a long history of hospitality and has over the years received so many people from around the world".

"I am deeply shocked by the terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain".

- ROMANIA Three wounded - two men aged 33 and 42 who are in a stable condition in hospital and another who suffered only minor injuries. The driver of the auto is still being searched for after he stabbed the dead man and took off at the roadblock.

It was less than 24 hours after a terrorist drove a van down the Las Ramblas in the heart of the Catalan capital, killing 13.

Catalan police say they arrested a fourth person in connection with both the attacks.
