Authorities, emergency services advise safe 4th of July fireworks practice

The citizens of McDowell County generally heed fireworks safety rules, and we are grateful for that.

So with that in mind, here are four fascinating sets of facts about fireworks.

Fireworks are one of the most exciting elements of the 4th of July but those colorful explosions can be risky.

More than 1,200 pounds of illegal fireworks were on display in Visalia Friday morning. All the rest allow usage in some form.

When asked about their prior experience with fireworks in the county, legal or otherwise, the McDowell County Sheriff's Office said: "Every Fourth of July, law enforcement and emergency services crews across the county respond to sporadic fireworks-related calls". Just because more regular Americans have been shooting off fireworks doesn't mean prices have surged.

However, firefighters recognize not everyone will heed their advice to avoid explosives, despite the fact that majority are technically illegal in Florida except for agricultural use.

Fireworks should leave and return on someone's same property - not land on a neighbor's roof, property or other structures.

Georgia has some places where fireworks are banned. Although not yet high enough for Commissioners Court to enact restrictions on outdoor burning, the number nevertheless indicates parts of the county remain susceptible to wildfires, Klabunde said. "Many times people get hurt without there being a fire".

When lighting the fuse, avoid leaning your body directly over the firework and do not point, throw or shoot fireworks at anyone. They'll also be on the lookout for drivers celebrating the holiday with alcohol.
