Won't support BJP's Presidential candidate if it is for votebank: Uddhav Thackeray

Sena President Uddhav Thackeray has convened a meeting of senior party leaders including ministers, legislators and MPs to discuss Kovind's candidature.

Mayawati told ANI that it could have been better if BJP would have selected a name from a non-political background.

The names of Meira Kumar and Shinde have been floated to counter the NDA so that parties like the BSP would have no problem going against the NDA Dalit candidate.

When asked what made him agree to back Kovind, the Sena chief said, "We have studied his personality and found him to be a very simple and a decent human being".

Shah, along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, visited Thackeray's residence "Matoshree" and held a close-door meeting, which started at around 10 am and lasted for almost 75 minutes.

"As far as organization is concerned Bhagwat ji himself said that it is a good entertainment news and his statement encapsulates and ends all the narratives which goes to Sangh headquarters", he added. "That is why Thackeray has expressed the party's position in such terms that it does not look too happy with the BJP choice, nor appears anti-Dalit", the Sena leader said.

BJP does not, in the arithmetic as has now developed, need Sena's support for the NDA, with Telangana Rashtra Samiti, AIADMK, and the YSR Congress pledging support, has improved its chances.

Sources in the CPI said Raja's name has been proposed by "some individuals and not any non-NDA parties".

That meeting would be followed by another with BJP ministers in Maharashtra government at the chief minister's residence "Varsha". They will contest every election and win, but will we win the fight in Kashmir? But instead of coming to us with the proposal they announced the candidate. "This is how we look at it", Communist Party of India national secretary D. Raja said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee didn't seem happy with the Kovind's candidature.

Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai, Shah recently said the BJP was ready for mid-term polls in Maharashtra.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued the notification in this regard and the process of the nomination has started that will continue till June 28.
