More than 50 firefighters are tackling a huge blaze at a block of flats in Bethnal Green.
The man is being treated for smoke inhalation. "The cause of the fire is not known at this stage".
The flat and the building's roof were destroyed by the flames.
"The police started cordoning off the road, it was chaos".
Witnesses say the building is now "basically a shell". Firefighters from Bethnal Green and surrounding fire stations are attending the scene.
Footage and images of the fire shows flames blazing out of a third floor window.
"We have sent our Hazardous Area Response Team, two ambulance crews and an incident response officer to the scene. The rest of our medics remain at the scene".
The London Fire Brigade received almost 50 calls from members of the public about the fire at approximately 4:25pm local time.
Bethnal Green Road has been closed in both directions.
