Red Sox manager John Farrell ejected in 7th inning

The Boston Red Sox have had a packed two days since returning home from an eight-game road trip.

On the night he returned to Fenway to have his No. 34 take its place among the franchise's other legends, his former teammates did their part to make sure it was a memorable one.

Los Angeles Angels' Parker Bridwell delivers a pitch against the Boston Red Sox in the first inning of a baseball game, Sunday, June 25, 2017, in Boston.

During a half-hour pregame ceremony in Fenway Park, Ortiz hit all the high notes.

Ortiz spent 14 of his 20 seasons with the Red Sox from 2003 to 2016 after breaking in with the Twins and playing six seasons with Minnesota. "He's everything", Ramirez said.

"Definitely, definitely, definitely", he said. "At home, I haven't figured it out yet, but I think I'm getting to that point". Kimbrel was the only reliever to give up a run for Boston.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 3: Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison homered and starter Gerrit Cole pitched six innings, lifting Pittsburgh over St. Louis.

Red Sox manager John Farrell came out to argue that time had been called before the balk. "A couple of pitches that cut his night short, but he was crisp throughout".

He had command of his pitches early, holding the Angels scoreless until the fourth, when a catching error by Leon at home allowed Albert Pujols to cross the plate. "It gives us an established, winning pitcher who's been through postseason play, been through a pennant race", said Boston president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, who was in charge in Detroit when Fister was with the Tigers from 2011-13. Bridwell has struck out seven, walked six, and allowed five runs in 11 innings over two starts.

Young restored Los Angeles' one-run advantage two innings later with an RBI single. The Angels had a runner on third base so the balk resulted in a run and a 5-1 LA lead.

NOTES: Red Sox LHP David Price developed a cracked fingernail on the middle finger of his throwing hand during Saturday's loss to the Angels. "We need guys to hold leads". I don't have enough words to say today how proud I am, and how proud of a papa I feel today.

But he said he must avoid get behind the leadoff hitter 3-0, like he did against Mookie Betts Friday. "You're family", Pedroia said.

A teary-eyed Ortiz only removed his sunglasses when it was time to address the crowd.

"My wife and kids, I want to thank you guys so much for putting up with all this", Ortiz said.

Before joining Boston (41-33), Fister went 1-0 with a 4.02 ERA in three starts with Triple-A Salt Lake this season. He made four relief appearances last season against Boston.

Longoria had a two-run single during Tampa Bay's four-run first inning, and Peterson and Norris both went deep in the third to chase Jimenez, who yielded nine runs, seven hits and four walks in 2 1/3 innings.
