Meet Martha, the world's ugliest dog

The annual world's ugliest dog contest was held in Petaluma on Friday.

The only animal in this year's contest too big to be held by her handler, Martha beat out 13 other dogs, a lot of them the kind of older, smaller dogs who win here. Where she saw beauty, he saw a "train wreck" with sagging skin, red eyes and a chronic drooling issue.

Leaving the contest with $1,500, a trophy and a trip to NY for media appearances, Martha was rescued by the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project in Sonoma County when she was almost blind.

"We celebrate the spirit and imperfections that make these dogs lovable", said event marketing director Karen Spencer. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Martha weighs in at 125 pounds and described the dog as being "gassy".

And now they've earned Martha a prestigious honor: the title of world's ugliest dog.

The victor of the 29 annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest has been announced and she's a little different to the usual victor.

"She knocks over every water bucket no matter how securely attached to the fence", owner Shirley Dawn Zindler said.

One of the purposes of the competition is to persuade those who want to adopt the dog from the shelter to show that, despite physical disabilities, these animals love their owners and are not indifferent to the attention of the spectators. Instead of showing off, she was seen casually laying down on her side with her droopy face spread across the ground. First impressions are one of the categories the judges use to rate the competitors, and the other three categories are audience reaction, unusual attributes and personality.

The second place was taken by the oldest participant in the competition, a 16-year-old dog Moe, a mixture of Brussels Griffon and Pug. He had lost his hearing and sight but his sense of smell is strong and he was enjoying all the smells at the Sonoma-Marin Fair where the contest is held, including funnel cakes and other fried goodies.

The victor of the ugliest dog contest?

Vicky Adler of Crestor, California had some lovely words about her pup, 8-year-old Zoomer, who competed for World's Ugliest Dog, saying, "He's my sexy boy".

Numerous contestants were adopted.
