Eid-ul-Fitr 2017: Muslims gear up for the big festival

The tradition continued under the Bush and Obama administrations which held either an Eid al-Fitr reception or an iftar, the evening meal eaten after sundown to end the daily fast during Ramadan. Therefore, chances are high of Eid being celebrated on June 26 across the country. But the Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia are likely to celebrate it on Monday.

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan (the 9 month of the Islamic calendar).

The festival marks the culmination of fasting and holy month of Ramzan.

"I think we need to go back to the basis of Islam which is to give peace to all mankind", Samsul Arifin told Reuters Television.

The day started with Eid prayers in Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Palestine and other Middle Eastern countries.

The celebration is a public holiday in many Muslim countries, but is not one in the United Kingdom, despite a campaign for it to be recognised back in 2014.

The Met office's press release revealed that the birth of moon will take place on crossing conjunction point at 00-45 PST on 25-06-17.

The White House did issue a statement acknowledging Eid late on Saturday, however.

During Eid al-Fitr, people extend their honest wishes and do good deeds, so that everyone can feel the warmth of human communication and the care of people around them.

The Islamic Center of Southern California is hosting an Eid celebration in Pasadena and the New Horizon school in L.A.'s Koreatown neighborhood is also hosting a Sunday morning celebration. The Official Twitter account of Haramain that updates about Makkah and Madeenah tweeted announcing the sighting of the moon after which the decision to begin Eid celebrations was made.
