Kris Bryant had a three-run homer, Willson Contreras added a two-run shot and Ian Happ also had four hits and drove in a pair for the Cubs, who have won four of five. "Instead of just focusing on scoring one, we were trying to score them all". Miami was held to four hits and a base on balls with JT Realmuto accounting for the offense with a three run jack in the first inning.
Athletics 3, White Sox 0:Khris Davis and Matt Joyce homered, Jharel Cotton pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning before leaving with a blister on his right thumb, and Oakland won in Chicago.
"I don't think there is anything wrong". But the Cubs bounced into a double play, had a runner caught stealing and stranded at least one runner in seven innings. The coincidental nature of this sequence isn't lost on this viewer: Maddon called for the hit and run to avoid the double play, and the broken hit and run led right into a rally-killing double play. "The mental mistakes are what make me upset".
Giancarlo Stanton hit his 20th homer for Miami, a solo shot off reliever Pedro Strop in the seventh.
Volquez is 8-0 with a 3.12 ERA against the Cubs in 13 career appearances. "We were due for a stretch where we weren't hitting as much, but we're doing enough to get wins".
Volquez walked the bases loaded in the second, but escaped when Anthony Rizzo popped out to end the inning.
The Marlins remain far behind in the playoff picture - double-digit games back in the division and wild-card races - but with a degree of sticktoitiveness that they lacked in May, they are treading water as June nears its close.
The Cubs cut their deficit to 3-2 with two sacrifice flies - Rizzo in the fourth and Tommy La Stella in the fifth. Stanton had two hits and Dee Gordon the other for Miami, while everyone else in the Marlins' lineup was a combined 0 for 19.
RHP Kyle Hendricks (tendinitis) is hoping to return before next month's All-Star Game.
It's tough to say what we see from either hurler but I'll go with the Cubs who really haven't been a good bet.
Marlins: Following a day off, the Marlins open a three-game series at home against the Mets, with RHP Dan Straily (5-4, 3.43) scheduled to pitch Tuesday against RHP Robert Gsellman (5-5, 6.04).
If Lester (5-4) can continue to follow a lackluster first two months with the kind of finish that made him the runner-up in Cy Young voting previous year, it could be a game-changer for the Cubs in a National League Central race that might be won with fewer than 90 wins.
They beat the Chicago Cubs, 4-2, on Sunday for a series split with the defending World Series champions, who drew the bulk of the almost 100,000 fans who showed up to Marlins Park for the four games. The Chicago Cubs are sending Mike Montgomery to the hill for Sunday's outing at the Miami Marlins.
