Cosby trial: Defence rests after one witness

The judge in Bill Cosby's sexual assault trial instructed jurors to break for the evening on Monday, after four hours of deliberations.

Cosby's lawyers used their closing arguments to say Constand lied on the witness stand about her relationship with the comic.

"She sat with her back to the kitchen wall", Cosby said.

Comedian Bill Cosby (R) departs the Montgomery County Courthouse on June 12, 2017 in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Last week, police detectives read aloud his statements to police in 2005 and in his civil deposition in 2006 responding to the allegations.

He is charged with three counts of aggravated indecent assault, each one punishable by up to 10 years behind bars.

Cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting Andrea Constand at his home near Philadelphia in 2004. The defense attorney secured the dismissal of aggravated indecent assault charges against a high-powered lawyer who was accused of drugging and raping a female employee.

The jury of seven men and five women were bused in from Allegheny County near Pittsburgh and have been sequestered in a hotel for the trial.

The jury continues to deliberate past 8 p.m. on Monday, according to a tweet by an Associated Press reporter. "Camille is standing by him and there appears to be no shift in her feelings about this", said a source.

The pair were expected to testify in the defense case.

"Ladies and gentlemen, he has told you what he has done", he said.

From her prime seat, Cosby's wife heard her husband's lawyer blame his legal woes on the supposed lies, greed and vanity of his accusers. Camille Cosby isn't in the courtroom for that.

They told the judge they wanted the "full context" of Cosby's testimony about the pills he gave to Ms Constand, which he had described to her as "friends". In the deposition, The Cosby Show star confessed to obtaining strong sedatives to hand out to females he wanted to have sex with, although he insisted he didn't use them when he is alleged to have assaulted Constand. They hammered home the point that she doesn't know just when it happened, and they questioned why she had regular phone contact with Cosby later that spring.

Dozens of women have made similar accusations against Cosby, 79, although only Constand has accused him of a crime that allegedly took place recently enough to allow for prosecution.

Once both sides returned to the courtroom, Cosby confirmed to O'Neill that he would not take the stand. O'Neill assured Cosby that he would instruct the jury that defendants are not required to testify. "He took that from Andrea Constand. This is talking to a lover", Cosby's lawyer Brian McMonagle said.

For the prosecution's closing statement, Steele argued that Cosby's own statements showed his guilt. He says she doesn't say 'yes.' He says he put his finger.

In late 2014, dozens of women went public with accusations that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them over the course of his lengthy comedic career. Throughout the course of her testimony, she admitted that there had been some minor inconsistencies in her earlier police statements, a fact that the Cosby defense latched onto and attempted to exploit to their maximum benefit.

Actor Bill Cosby could charm jurors at his sexual assault trial if he testifies this week, but experts say the risk would be considerable.

Other actors have joined on other trial days, including two appearances by Joe Torry. His daughters have not done so. However, his publicist Andrew Wyatt suggested last week that "nothing's ever off the table". That is evidenced, he said, by how Cosby left Constand disheveled on a couch after the incident.

In the closing, McMonagle also sought to dismiss Cosby's attempts to pay Constand's tutition not as an attempt to buy her silence for a criminal act but a way to avoid a confrontation with his longtime wife, Camille.

"People think that because of optics that if you don't see them here, then they don't love you and you're not together anymore".
