Bruno Mars opens 2017 BET Awards

Follow this space as I, The Root's Managing Editor Danielle Belton and Grapevine senior editor Yesha Callahan report on all the behind-the-scenes action as the live show unfolds at 8 p.m./7 p.m. CST in Los Angeles at the Microsoft Theater.

Remy Ma has ended Nicki Minaj's seven year winning streak for best female hip hop artist at the BET Awards.

Stonebwoy earned his second nomination in the 2017 edition of the Black Entertainment Television Awards, following his first nomination and win in 2015.

Meanwhile, New Edition will receive the lifetime achievement award.

"I just love everything about him", BET Networks' president Debra Lee said prior to presenting Chance with the award, making him the youngest recipient yet.

The 2017 BET Awards are set to be a star-studded night, and with Leslie Jones at the helm, it'll no doubt be a feel-good, amusing one as well.

Both pop stars are the top nominees at Sunday’s show, June 25, 2017, where they will compete in four of the same categories, including video of the year.

Bruno Mars, Mary J. Blige, Gucci Mane, Chris Brown, Big Sean, Trey Songz, DJ Khaled, Future and Maxwell are some of the artistes scheduled to perform on the night.

Billboard reported that the first-time BET Award victor performed "Perm", an upbeat song from his latest album "24K Magic". You will be able to get this on Snapchat the day of I believe.

"I am so excited to be hosting the BET Awards this year", Jones said in an earlier statement. In addition to his performance, the "That's What I Like" singer is nominated for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, Coca-Cola Viewers' Choice Award, Video Director of the Year, Video of the Year and Album of the Year.

Yara Shahidi, Cardi B, Issa Rae, Jamie Foxx, La La Anthony, the cast of Universal Pictures' Girls Trip (Regina Hall, Tiffany Haddish, Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah), Trevor Noah, Robin Thede, Cari Champion and Demetrius Shipp Jr. are all set to take the stage. Last year's energy-filled performances included tributes to the late Prince and a memorable collaboration between Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar; no word yet on whether or not new mom-of-three Beyonce will make an appearance, but if so, it'll most likely be as an audience member rather than performer (though she would be a showstopper nonetheless!).
