Ben Platt, the victor for best actor in a musical for "Dear Evan Hansen", didn't lose the chance to preach to the "Snapchat generation". Clearly, the most respected Broadway musical that went home with the most awards was Dear Evan Hansen, and Hello Dolly!, Oslo, and specific actors and actresses also stood out.
"Oslo" performer Michael Aronov won the Tony Award for best featured actor in a play, while Gavin Creel of 'Hello, Dolly!' won best featured actor in a musical.
The 23-year-old actor won the best actor award for "Dear Evan Hansen", which won six awards in total.
The acidly amusing Kevin Kline was named best leading actor in a play for his performance in Noel Coward's Present Laughter, while Laurie Metcalf won best leading actress for her darkly comic work in A Doll's House Part 2.
"Midler beat out Patti LuPone ("War Paint"), Christine Ebersole ("War Paint"), Denée Benton ("Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812") and Eva Noblezada (Miss Saigon").
Stacey Mindich, center, and the cast and crew of "Dear Evan Hansen" accept the award for best musical at the 71st annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 11, 2017, in NY.
While recent awards shows have featured full-blown attacks on President Donald Trump, including Meryl Streep's speech at the Golden Globes, few presenters or winners on Sunday chose to address the new administration or other hot-button issues in their appearances.
The Tony Awards kicked off with Kevin Spacey as its first-time host hoping to shake the telecast's post-"Hamilton" hangover.
His opening performance started with a parody of a song from hit musical Dear Evan Hansen.
"Shut that crap off", Midler shouted above the melody.
In fact, in 1979, Midler lost an Oscar to "Norma Rae" actress Sally Field, who, this year, was also nominated for a Tony for Best Actress in a Play for her role in "The Glass Menagerie".
Come From Away, Evan Hansen's closest competition for Best Musical, had to settle for just one award, for director Christopher Ashley.
Spacey was named as Tony host after several other celebrities turned the job down. They embraced me to such a degree that I can only say, 'It's more than I deserve.' So, thank you.
The gong was Midler's first Tony in a competitive category and comes half a century after the famed, Grammy-winning singer and songwriter made her Broadway debut.
"They kept pushing me along to do these state-wide contests", Midler said.
