US Rep Scalise's condition upgraded to 'serious'

The condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been upgraded to fair, a week after he was shot while participating in a practice with members of the Republican congressional baseball team. He's now expected to recover.

It remains unclear when he may be released from the hospital.

Scalise's trauma surgeon said Friday he can hope to make an "excellent recovery", even though the lawmaker arrived at the hospital Wednesday at imminent risk of death.

The update on Scalise's condition comes just hours after the FBI gave an update on the investigation into the shooting that left six people injured.

Sava said that Scalise's doctors "fully expect him to walk.and hopefully run" in the future.

"So he's doing - he's doing a lot better", said Ryan. Scott DesJarlais, Trent Franks, Mo Brooks, Morgan Griffith, Jim Jordan and Jeff Duncan, among others - were intended targets of 66-year-old James Hodgkinson's rampage at Eugene Simpson Stadium Park in Alexandria, Virginia Wednesday morning.

Sava said he told Scalise's family that "I am not declaring victory until he's playing ball in his back yard with his family".

Two U.S. Capitol Police officers - who House Speaker Paul Ryan identified as Crystal Griner and David Bailey - were wounded in the attack.

However, after multiple surgeries, Scalise showed signs of improvement, and by Saturday, his condition was upgraded from critical to serious.
