Law enforcement agents investigate the scene in Alexandria, Va., Thursday, June 15, 2017, the day after House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. was shot during during a congressional baseball practice.
The attack on a group of Republican lawmakers at an Alexandria, Va., baseball field was not linked to terrorism, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a briefing on Wednesday.
Alexandria Police Chief Michael Brown lauded the heroic actions of Officer Nicole Battaglia and two other officers who were the first to arrive at a field where GOP congressmen were practicing for the game.
Police officers shot and killed the gunman, 66-year-old James Hodgkinson of IL. Hodgkinson was fatally shot during the attack. They say they don't think the shooting was an act of terrorism. "No question that it would have been different if they hadn't been there, and we owe a lot to them". Slater confirmed prior reports that Hodgkinson had asked an unspecified witness before the shooting, "Is this the Republican or Democrat baseball team?"
President Donald Trump offered his support for Scalise during remarks Thursday evening at a congressional picnic and said that he gave Scalise's kids "a lovely tour" of the White House. "A second document with a rough sketch of several streets in Washington, D.C. was found on Hodgkinson, however, it was not deemed to be of investigative significance". He rented out a storage unit where he kept more than 200 rounds of ammunition, among other belongings.
Americans may know, thanks to public social media profiles, that attempted murderer James Hodgkinson was an active Democratic activist and Bernie Sanders campaign volunteer who hated Republican members of Congress.
