Spitfires forward Viladri selected 11th overall by Kings in NHL Draft

The 2017 NHL Entry Draft didn't have many major surprises, starting with Nico Hischier and Nolan Patrick as the first two picks of the night.

Hischier had no idea he would be the top pick in the draft.

The Blackhawks drafted 18-year-old defenseman Ian Mitchell in the second round at No. 57 overall in the NHL Draft on Saturday morning in Chicago.

"Just a good summer of training, getting bigger and stronger", Patrick said.

Hischier fits in nicely with Shero's desire to put a faster team on the ice.

Nolan Patrick was the highest-rated prospect in the 2017 draft class, according to many experts, yet the Flyers were able to select him No. 2 overall.

The Philadelphia Flyers might have had the first, and that was only at No. 2. The same goes for Patrick in Philadelphia, where they already have Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny, and Jakub Voracek. "I think he may be a little more offensively dynamic than me and I think I may be a little more defensive than him". It's tough to put in words right now, but it's a special day for me and my family. [The Devils] wanted him. It's not like I'm sitting here mad wishing I went to Jersey. "They didn't want me, so it doesn't matter too much to me".

The Kings managed to get him No. 11 overall after the first 10 teams all passed him over. Patrick played just 33 games, yet was able to score 20 goals and 46 points in the process. It was then that he scored 41 goals and 102 points in 72 games, and suddenly grew into an NHL-sized body while winning the playoff MVP award in the WHL.

Button called Patrick a "very smart player". Defensemen Miro Heiskanen (No. 3 overall to Dallas) and Cale Makar (No. 4 to Colorado) and right wing Owen Tippett (No. 10 to Florida) were the lone exceptions.

Nino Niederreiter, who was taken fifth overall by the New York Islanders in 2010, was previously the Swiss player to go highest in the draft.

"I think they believe in me a lot and that's something I really appreciate", Glass said. Flyers general manager Ron Hextall was equally concerned.

Glass is coming off a career year in 2016-17 with the Winterhawks, in which he recorded 94 points in 69 games played.

Because first-round picks Tyson Jost and Brock Boeser turned pro in the offseason, UND won't have a first-round pick on the team's roster this season if Mismash goes in the second round.

General manager Brian MacLellan announced the deal Friday just before the start of the National Hockey League draft.

Hawks forward Ryan Hughes was not drafted in his first year of eligibility.

The Blackhawks were busy trading and drafting on Friday.

Blackhawks, Blue Jackets trade: Chicago re-acquired forward Brandon Saad from Columbus for forward Artemi Panarin. NY got the No. 7 pick in a trade with Arizona and selected center Lias Andersson, whose father Niklas played in the league. There was a time when the Oilers future revolved around the likes of Nail Yakupov, Taylor Hall, Justin Schultz and Jordan Eberle.

The next Canadian team to pick was Calgary, which took defenceman Juuso Valimaki at No. 16.
