Meet the World's Ugliest Dog, 3-year-old Martha!

She constantly plopped down on her side on the stage, her droopy face spread out when she was supposed to be showing off. The 29th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest was held in Petaluma, California.

That is, the jowly 3-year-old Neapolitan mastiff has some remarkably expansive cheeks - so expansive, in fact, they droop practically to her knees and flap like slobbery wings when she shakes her head. The Associated Press news agency said Martha immediately won over the judges by obliviously sprawling across the stage, with no intention of doing any tricks.

Martha had chronic pain and was almost blind from a long-neglected eye condition when it was rescued in Sebastopol in Sonoma County. Her handler answered for her: "I'd gloat, but I need a nap".

At the competition, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California, the unsightly yet lovable dogs were paraded down a red carpet with the hopes of winning $1,500, a trophy and a trip to NY for media appearances.

The aesthetically-challenged pups are judged on their unusual attributes, audience reaction and first impressions.

"The dogs don't care whether you call them ugly or lovely", she said. However, with his strong sense of smell, Moe was able to enjoy funnel cakes and other fried items.

Monkey, a 6-year-old Brussels Griffon, and Icky, an 8-year-old unknown breed, were both rescued from the homes of hoarders.

Martha won the title of ugliest dog in a competition that featured 14 pooches.

Jason Wurtz of Van Nuys, California, holds his dog Sweepee Rambo after winning the 2016 World's Ugliest Dog contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair on June 24, 2016 in Petaluma, California.
