London tower blocks evacuated as 27 buildings fail fire tests

Camden Council leader Georgia Gould said the authority took the "extraordinary action" to clear 600 flats because "we are really clear that those four blocks are not safe".

Camden Borough Council said in a statement Saturday that it housed numerous residents at two temporary shelters while many others were provided hotel rooms, after inspectors found fire safety issues in housing towers, following the inferno in a west London apartment block that killed 79.

Added to the cladding, the London Fire Brigade "also identified concerns relating to services that have been run through compartment walls leading to possible breaches in the buildings ability to stop fire spreading", Dan Daly, assistant commissioner for fire safety, said in a statement after the evacuation.

Residents of a public housing complex being evacuated in north London because of fire safety concerns say they are both angry and frightened about being forced from their homes.

She added: "Together we decided that the Taplow block needs to be temporarily decanted while we undertake urgent fire safety works so that residents can be fully assured of their safety".

"We've had everyone - council staff, volunteers, different councillors - all coming together with the fire service to move people safely out of their accommodation".

Safety officials in the United Kingdom have ordered the evacuation of 27 tower blocks because they failed fire checks carried out after the deadly Grenfell Tower blaze.

Camden Borough Council says in a statement Saturday that it housed numerous residents at two temporary shelters while many others were provided hotel rooms.

In Camden, however, the London Fire Brigade found a number of faults, including concern about cladding, faulty fire doors and holes in compartment walls that could help a fire to spread.

She said officers had been through all levels of the tower and would be installing an external elevator to facilitate completing the forensic search, which could take until the end of the year. Now, I'm being told they can't re-house me because I've got a dog.

This comes after Prime Minister Theresa May admitted again this week that the response to the West London inferno was not good enough, and apologised for the "local and national" failure of the authorities.

The Camden blocks between 2006 and 2009 were refurbished by the same company that had renovated Grenfell and had the same unsafe cladding.

The number of high-rise residential blocks which have failed fire safety tests because of cladding has risen to 34. At least 79 people died in the June 14 fire, which engulfed the building so quickly overnight that firefighters were unable to reach numerous victims.

It said they were still awaiting the results from independent technical experts, the Building Research Establishment as to whether the cladding was the flammable type.

"Words can not express our sorrow at this bad tragedy", Whirlpool said in a statement.

May said the local authority would be given all the means necessary to make sure people had somewhere to stay. Landlords are being asked to check what the cladding on their buildings is made from. Grenfell Tower is situated in Kensington, one of the richest boroughs in Europe.

Teacher Kim Price, who lives in one of the towers with her 14-year-old son, said as late as 4pm residents were told it was safe for them to stay in their homes.
