Eid al-Fitr: Saudi Arabia declares Sunday first day

Eid al-Fitr is usually commemorated marks the end of the Muslim holy fasting month of Ramadan.

But for such a major global event, working out when it will happen is surprisingly complicated - as Ahmen Khawaja and Amir Rawash explain. Eid implies breaking of the fast that Muslims observe during Ramadan as they wish each other happiness and good health, indulging in merriment and celebrations. Bangladesh will take a call first followed by India and Pakistan based on Sun set timing in the respective regions.

Each year, the month begins around 11 days prior to when it started in the previous solar year. A significant factor in this year's rise in numbers is that the holiday falls within the summer, he suggested, when schools are out and most inhabitants seek to escape the blazing hot temperatures. It closes the month of Ramadan, during which observing Muslims would abstain from food, water and immoral acts from dawn until dusk.

Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev also congratulated Russian Muslims on the Eid al-Fitr holiday.

But within Islam there is debate over when this begins.

The Rooyat-e-Hilal Committee New Delhi, Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Lahore and National Moon-Sighting Committee Bangladesh will hold meetings shortly after Maghrib prayers today i.e. Sunday June 25 corresponding to 29th Ramadan.

The Saudi Press Agency reported multiple witnesses observed the new moon of the 10th month of Shawal after sunset on Saturday.

The month of fasting of the followers of Islam - near 20% of the world population - comes to an end, officially, on Saturday (24).

The most common delicacy prepared by any Muslim family is Sheer Khurma.

In his Eid'l Fitr message, Duterte noted that the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal always brings great joy to the Muslim brothers and sisters. We have received many complaints from teachers that the children abandon school weeks after the Eid celebrations, which is not the best.

The President has had a fraught relationship with the Muslim community in the United States.
