Cavaliers owner, Billups met for 2nd straight day

Cleveland - Chauncey Billups once competed against the Cleveland Cavaliers as a player.

Billups most recently served as an ESPN analyst.

Billups, 40, was a five-time NBA All-Star, who won a championship and was named a NBA Finals MVP during his 17-year NBA career.

James and Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert aren't exactly fond of one another, a relationship that declined precipitously when James left Cleveland in 2010 and Gilbert wrote the now-legendary letter. Assistant general manager Koby Altman remains with the team and is part of a group overseeing draft preparation and trade talks.

There were several reports the former NBA point guard was offered the position of vice president of basketball operations, with one saying a five-year deal was on the table. He has a home in Los Angeles and an increasing amount of off-court business in Los Angeles.

One possibility is that Billups knows the job is his if he wants it, but that both sides chose to wait until after the NBA Draft on Thursday to delve into contract details. I know his game.

The Warriors paid $2.4 million for McCaw last season. Being around him in different settings I have a feel for what he likes to do. Of course, we can not forget about selecting Jamal Murray with the seventh overall pick a year ago, a player who has an incredibly high ceiling and even Steph Curry like potential.

The Cavs traded this year's No. 1 to Portland for taking Anderson Varejao's contract last season, and were also not permitted to buy into the second round like they did a year ago to take Kay Felder.

Now the question becomes if Howard can bounce back from two tumultuous seasons in Atlanta and Houston, and also fit in in Charlotte. Obviously, the interest in Love (an All-Star and one of five in the National Basketball Association to average 19 points and 10 rebounds this season) was not strong enough. The owner, born and living in MI, has a well-known love for MI athletes, and Billups, the leader of the Detroit Pistons' 2004 championship team, fits the bill.

Howard is the NBA's leading active leader in shots blocked and rebounds.

As Gilbert looks to replace Griffin, the 40-year-old Billups would seem to be a ideal fit.

Afterward, before the Cavaliers were presented with their silver conference trophy, Griffin had to be talked into joining the players on the podium.
