Philadelphia 76ers take Fultz with top pick in NBA draft

But after I spent most of Thursday evening watching NBA draft coverage on Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia rather than ESPN or the NBA Network, I changed my mind. They expect the trio to help lead the franchise to their first playoff appearance since 2012 and first championship since 1983.

Duke's Jayson Tatum answers questions during an interview after being selected by the Boston Celtics as the third pick overall during the NBA basketball draft, Thursday, June 22, 2017, in NY.

It puts a spotlight on the league's one-and-done rule, which allows players to leave college for the National Basketball Association after their freshmen season.

At No. 4, the Phoenix Suns took Kansas' Josh Jackson, and at No. 5, the Sacramento Kings selected Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox. After Martin averaged less than five points or rebounds a game in his first two seasons, Portland drafted Walton in 1974 and Martin was out of the league two years later.

In the second round, the Celtics picked up forward Semi Ojeleye from SMU at No. 37, Arizona guard Kadeem Allen at No. 53 and Cal's Jabari Bird at No. 56. It's easy to overreact to Boston's trade, to wonder if the team screwed up by passing on Fultz - to try judging the swap immediately, instead of years from now, when the truth will finally begin to emerge.

Gonzaga's Zach Collins was a top-30 recruit as a high school senior in 2016 and was not a projected 2017 first-round pick one year ago. Still, Ainge said, Tatum wasn't an obvious choice. "I just realized that I was doing stuff that other kids weren't doing and it just started to work out for me".

At 6-foot-6 (1.98 m), Ball plays a style that harkens back to the "Showtime" days of the Lakers, dishing off no-look passes, launching threes and finishing at the hoop with rim-jarring slam dunks.

He turned out to be correct.

"Hey man, LeBron, I like to win and I know you like to win", Ball said looking at the camera.

"It paints a picture of what I can", Bolden said of the award.

That won't preclude him from revisiting some of those discussions once free agency opens next month, though.

"I think he'll teach me a lot and I'll take an even bigger step each year", Monk said.

A record 16 freshmen were taken in Round 1, including a new high for first-year players selected in the lottery.

Markelle Fultz walks on stage with National Basketball Association commissioner Adam Silver after being drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

"It was unreal", Fultz said. "There's been some movement and discussion about their draft situation and draft rights", Colangelo said.

Tatum called it a "great compliment" that the Celtics took him after moving the top pick. But, knowing that these players went in the first round gives me a sense of relief to why we struggled so much. I was all for it.

The Philadelphia 76ers have put The Process in the hands of Washington guard Markelle Fultz.
