The Celtics delegation arrived, were notified Jackson had to cancel the session, and jumped on a flight the next day back to Boston.
"So there was something that he didn't want to play for the Celtics", he said.
"I think of him as a combo, I think he can (play point guard or shooting guard)", Demps said.
Jackson was asked if he was concerned whether the decision to skip a Celtics workout would affect him in Thursday night's National Basketball Association draft.
During Thursday's National Basketball Association draft, nearly everybody presumed that the Philadelphia 76ers would take Markelle Fultz at No. 1 and the Los Angeles Lakers would take Lonzo Ball at No. 2.
"When you have all your family and your friends surrounding you at a time like that and all the people who were there from the beginning, it made it all that more special".
Nevertheless, the Celtics have their man in Tatum-the same guy, he says, they would have taken if they hadn't traded out of the No. 1 overall slot earlier this week.
Can we expect a 20-year-old to carry the Celtics to the NBA Finals? No. He's a terrific kid and a good player. "So we tried not to overreact to those kinds of things and make a big deal of it. Agents and players have all sorts of motivations to get to certain places".
But the moment was all worth it, Jackson said.
Jackson added that playing at Kansas forced him to hone his defensive acumen against bigger players at the power forward spot. McDonough said they always try to be "very thorough" with any pick, but estimated they talked to 20 to 30 sources about Jackson's incident outside of a Lawrence bar where he was accused of causing damage to a auto. "It worked out. I had a great time up there on my visit and obviously they enjoyed me". I had to bury my head in my hands a little bit, I didn't want anybody to see me tear up a little bit. Most importantly, the summer action will help them get acclimated to the team's system ahead of training camp in October.
An athletic 6-8 forward, Jackson has a unique explosiveness and a knack for getting to the rim, where he often throws down highlight-reel dunks over helpless defenders.
Jackson should fit in well with a Suns roster that's filled with young, talented players led by star-in-the-making guard Devin Booker who should be able to grow and develop together in the same mold as the Golden State Warriors or San Antonio Spurs. "They're very prideful, as they should be, about their team", said Tatum.
That team will probably be the real Eastern Conference favorites.
"I'm trying not to cry right now", Tatum said in an interview on ESPN following the Thursday draft.
