Trump Says 'Let's Play Ball' At Record Turnout For Congressional Baseball Game

Members of Congress took the field at Washington's Nationals Park on Thursday night for the charity baseball game, many wearing hats to honor Scalise, who has represented Louisiana in the House since 2008.

The game Thursday, a Washington tradition since 1909 in which Republicans and play Democrats, went on Thursday evening at Nationals Stadium, home of the city's major league baseball team.

Dr. Jack Sava, trauma director at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said Friday that several operations have controlled the bleeding and Scalise's vital signs have stabilized. That social media and letters to the editor showed Hodgkinson to be an ardent liberal who hated congressional Republicans gave the attacks an bad partisan overtone and inevitably led Rep. Peter King, R-Iowa, Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and others to blame it on the left's harsh criticism of President Trump.

The doctors said that while Scalise remains in critical condition, they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition".

In a statement Saturday, Matt Mika's family says he will remain in the intensive care unit at George Washington University Hospital at least through the weekend. The last time his team took the field together was Wednesday at practice when a gunman opened fire and shot four people.

After Hodgkinson's shooting spree began on Wednesday morning at a Congressional GOP baseball practice, he was shot by Capitol Police on the scene and subsequently died of his injuries.

Investigators studying Wednesday's attack at a suburban Virginia park said shooter James Hodgkinson had obtained his rifle and handgun from licensed firearms dealers. This person was not authorized to speak publicly about the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.

"I feel a lot more confident and a lot more optimistic than I did two, three days ago", Sava said.

The bullet damaged blood vessels, bones, and internal organs, Sava said.

Scalise is sedated, but the husband and father of two has been able to respond to his doctors and family.

Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media. The bullet that hit him fragmented into hundreds of pieces, but Sava said there is more risk involved in trying to find and remove those fragments than benefit.

But he added: "We fully expect him to be able to walk", and "hopefully run". Doctors immediately performed surgery, but additional operations will be required, the hospital said in the late-night statement.

Another attendee, Dana Moore, said, "I'm tried of seeing all the division and everything".
