The super secret Senate GOP health care bill is finally out, and it's not as bad as everyone had feared. The 142-page proposal includes massive cuts to Medicaid, cuts in taxes for the wealthy and defunding of Planned Parenthood for at least one year.
"If this is the Senate's idea of a bill with heart, then the women of America should have fear struck in theirs", Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement.
Rural health clinics don't have to provide services to low-income people. California requires all abortion plans in the state to cover abortion, so it would have to either change that law or none of its citizens would receive any tax credits.
That's what brought Planned Parenthood supporters out to West Capital Park in Albany Wednesday to oppose the Republican plan.
She wrote, "the health care providers who helped me at Planned Parenthood were my only line of defense against what had happened to my body ... they provided me with the medication I needed, along with the emotional support I needed to handle this trauma". Richards added that people can also text DEFEND to 22422 or visit the Planned Parenthood website for more information on how to take action.
Planned Parenthood performs more than abortions and the majority of their patients use medicaid for their services.
After more than a half-decade of unsuccessful attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, the GOP appears on the verge of actually doing it.
Thousands upon thousands of Americans, including Republicans, threw themselves into that collective effort, not for political reasons, but for intensely personal ones - a sick child, a parent lost to cancer, the memory of medical bills that threatened to derail their dreams.
Our elected leaders must reject any attempt to cut off millions of people from Planned Parenthood and the lifesaving preventive care we provide.
Michele Hendrickson, a regional coordinator for Students for Life, said that the issue above all is Planned Parenthood because the organization could funnel pregnant students into its Reading office for abortions."We know Planned Parenthood is bad for students because they target that demographic of vulnerable young people", she said.Olivia Clark, 18, gave birth to her son not long after graduating from Wilson High School a year ago."My son was saved by the pro-life movement", she said.
Facing uniform Democratic opposition, the Senate plan would fail if just three of the chamber's 52 Republicans defect. Republicans can only lose two senators in order to pass the bill.
Just last night, supporters across the country, including those in Green Bay and Madison, joined together to proudly stand with Planned Parenthood by demand the Senate protect access to essential health care. A senior Republican Senate aide told Newsweek Thursday that they were not sure whether Planned Parenthood provision would be allowed.
"We're talking about STI testing and screening, birth control, cancer screening", said Anna Eskamani, senior director of public affairs and communications for Planned Parenthood.
