Markelle Fultz top pick in NBA draft

The Sixers then chose Washington guard Markelle Fultz with the No. 1 pick, while the Los Angeles Lakers then selected UCLA's Lonzo Ball at No. 2.

Boston selected Jayson Tatum with the No. 3 pick Thursday, adding a 6-foot-8 small forward who was a polished scoring threat during his lone season at Duke.

NEW YORK (AP) — Markelle Fultz is ready for the National Basketball Association draft.

Philadelphia, which was picking No. 1 overall for the second straight year, acquired the top pick in the draft from the Boston Celtics in a trade completed earlier this week. Fultz now joins a young core which includes 2016 No. 1 pick Ben Simmons (20 years), a 7-footer who can play the point guard position, Joel Embiid (23 years) who averaged 20.2 points and almost 8 rebounds last season until an injury cut it short, and power forward Dario Saric (23 years). Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Robert Covington were all excited by the news this past weekend.

"I think that, in this kind of position-less league, those guys are really valuable", Stevens said.

On draft night, they still grabbed one of the most NBA-ready players available.

Fultz was sixth in the nation in points per game, averaging 23.2 points a game-and the only freshmen among the top 10 NCAA Division I scorers.

"I take a lot of pride in it", Fultz said about being at the head of this class. It's tough to fault these super-talents for taking hold of their opportunity to make substantial money and play in the National Basketball Association, but we've seen a decrease in skill and fundamentals and an increased reliance on athleticism-these tremendous athletes find success in the college game, but a majority of them fade out in the National Basketball Association due to lack of lower-level preparation. Let us see what these three elections suppose in their most immediate effect. "We are an organization on the rise in so many different ways".

Hopefully the drafting of "Philly" Fultz marks the end of "The Process" and the beginning of winning for a loyal fanbase that's tolerated more than its share of losing. We've tried to be so meticulously responsible in growing this patiently. His all-around skillset should cause him to be selected among the first 10 picks. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who knows a thing or two about sticking around the college game, recently called the one-and-done rule a "travesty" for college basketball, stating "It's not even six months and they're gone". He was basically basing his entire opinion on the fact that Fultz's Washington team went 9-22 last season.

Philadelphia had the No. 1 draft spot three previous times, taking Doug Collins in 1973, Allen Iverson in 1996 and Simmons.

It was rumored that Washington's overall record played into the Boston Celtics' surprising decision to trade down from the top-overall pick with the Sixers.

"We're going to keep driving to get it ideal", Colangelo said. "It's well on its way there".

Tatum said he feels fortunate to be joining a contender immediately. Consider, four years ago, the Sixers' season-ticket base at this time of the year was at 3,400. They already have, on paper, everything they needed; Now you just have to let it grow.

Most of the selections Thursday night seem to have fan approval. Off the court, he is exceedingly loyal to those that believe in him.

"I think that he's a guy that we thought really highly of from Day One", Stevens said.

"This, I think, has a chance to be a historic draft", Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Scott Layden said. A lover of Chick-fil-A and his own homemade fried rice.

"Speed kills and you can't teach it", said Fox. "And I'm just looking forward to going in there and giving it my all and hopefully changing the program around". I've always respected that about him.
