Hilarious Dennis Smith Jr. tweet from 2012 goes viral

The Dallas Mavericks have taken North Carolina State point guard Dennis Smith Jr. with the ninth overall pick in the National Basketball Association draft.

Dennis Smith Jr. admits he "definitely has a chip on my shoulder", which might be one of his strongest attributes entering this NBA Draft. A bit undersized, the former Wolfpack will likely immediately step into the starting lineup in the fall and be an upgrade an anemic Mavs' offense.

Dennis Smith Jr., right, is congratulated by family and friends after being selected by the Dallas Mavericks as the ninth pick overall during the NBA basketball draft, Thursday, June 22, 2017, in NY.

Smith came to Raleigh as a consensus five-star recruit, ranked in the top 10 in the country, despite tearing his ACL as a senior in high school. He carved through defenses throughout the entire 2016-17 college season, but also found the time to set his teammates up for easy buckets as well.

Currently Yogi Ferrell, J.J. Barea and Devin Harris are the top options at point guard for the Mavericks. The other three starters under contract are Nowitzki, shooting guard Wesley Matthews and forward Harrison Barnes. The Mavericks acquired him at the trading deadline last season when they were retooling the roster to get younger after a woeful start led to a 33-49 finish.

"This is a huge day for us and a huge night", Carlisle said shortly after the selection of Smith. Smith registered two triple-doubles on the year to become the first ACC player to ever do so in conference play. Smith has good, aggressive ball handling ability that allows him to maneuver into the paint and draw fouls. Nowitzki announced he'll return for his 20th season in Dallas, so now the attention turns to grooming the remaining nucleus of the team.

Is there any reason to be nervous about Dennis Smith Jr.?

North Carolina State's Dennis Smith poses for photos while walking the red carpet before the start of the NBA basketball draft, Thursday, June 22, 2017, in NY. He is also the highest Pack player to be drafted since Tom Gugliotta went sixth overall to the Washington Wizards in 1992. "I've been underrated my whole life".

"I would project him as a starter but he will have to earn it", Carlisle said. I'm accustom to it. After New York selected Frank Ntilikina with the 8th overall pick, Dallas knew they got their guy with the 9th pick. A unusual set of circumstances panned out, a surprise pick or two, and we got our guy. "We feel both of those things kind of fell in place".

When Dallas phoned Smith Jr.in via speakerphone to talk to us media, you could hear the fire in Smith's voice as he is anxious to get on the court and prove people wrong.
