Floyd Mayweather confirms Conor McGregor boxing match in Las Vegas in August

"Floyd Mayweather is 40 years old, and he's always had trouble with southpaws".

It didn't take long for McGregor to respond to the official announcement in typically belligerent fashion.

After a seeming eternity of speculation, the mega-fight between boxing powerhouse Floyd Mayweather Jr. and MMA sicko Conor McGregor has been given the go-ahead.

Do you think Conor McGregor can beat Floyd Mayweather in the boxing ring? Both Mayweather and McGregor confirmed the bout via social media on Wednesday afternoon.

When the two champions meet it will be a boxing rather than mixed martial arts match-up.

White said that the negotiation phase of the fight had been "smooth", which may come as a surprise to fans who have been waiting for months for the fight to be announced. Mayweather compiled a 49-0 record before retiring following a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto in September 2015.

McGregor had recently obtained a boxing license in California, and is expected to get one in Nevada for a fight with Mayweather. Now, Mayweather will end his retirement to face McGregor, who was the first UFC fighter to hold two titles simultaneously.

They are also likely getting paid millions for allowing McGregor to fight, and they won't have to do as much work as if they were putting on the show. The weight may be more challenging for McGregor.

"He is absolutely 100 percent positive that he wins this fight", White said (h/t) MMAFighting.com. He was just 154.4 pounds for his last fight against Eddie Alvarez, but he weighed 168 pounds in his previous fight against Nate Diaz. Although McGregor has never competed in the boxing ring, he has amassed a record of 21-3 in the "Octagon", and is one of the most recognized fighters in the world.

"The fans wanted to see this fight".
