Rep. Steve Scalise Now in 'Fair' Condition

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise's condition has improved, with doctors announcing they were upgrading his status from serious to fair Wednesday.

He "is beginning an extended period of healing and rehabilitation", the hospital said in a statement Wednesday.

Upon Scalise's arrival at the hospital last week, "he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death", said Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, at a press conference Friday.

It was early on the morning of June 14 when James T. Scalise and four others were injured.

The 2017 Congressional Baseball Game last Thursday set a record for fundraising and ticket sales, organizers announced Tuesday, a sign that there was an outpouring of support in the days after the shooting at the Republican team's practice.

During the past week Scalise has undergone several surgeries and blood transfusions.

The Scalise shooting has reignited debate on Capitol Hill as to whether members of Congress receive sufficient protection.

Two U.S. Capitol Police officers - who House Speaker Paul Ryan identified as Crystal Griner and David Bailey - were wounded in the attack.

Among those participating were Vice President Mike Pence and California Rep. Pete Aguilar.

Barth was shot in the leg and has already been released from the hospital.
