There are some pretty good players on the unprotected list, including three-time Stanley Cup winning goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, as well as fellow netminders Roberto Luongo and Peter Mrazek. It will last through Tuesday.
The Vegas Golden Knights will build out their roster through the NHL's expansion draft on June 21.
The Anaheim Ducks were the NHL's top of the class team when it came to leaving good players exposed.
From Saturday afternoon through Thursday morning, after Vegas makes its picks, the rest of the teams can't make trades with each other. It could get interesting if McPhee say Vatanen as a trade chip and Murray was able to promote the fact that Vatanen had value outside of simply being an on-ice player for Vegas next season.
Of the Golden Knights' 30 picks, 14 must be forwards, nine must be defensemen and three have to be goalies. Anaheim wants to keep defensemen Sami Vatanen and Josh Manson, Columbus wants to keep goalie Joonas Korpisalo, forward Josh Anderson, and defenseman Jack Johnson, and NY wants to keep forwards Josh Bailey and Casey Cizikas.
The Vegas Golden Knights are the first major sports franchise to hit the strip, and they'll select a player from each National Hockey League team in the upcoming expansion draft. "When we call general managers back, we're basically saying, 'Do you want to hear what's going on with your team, or are you just content to sit and we're going to do what we want to do?' majority want to talk about it, and then we tell them exactly what's going on and if they want to do something about it or not".
"We are still talking to clubs and we are open to doing deals with clubs if they want to protect their rosters" McPhee said.
The moves should add to the draft pick and prospect stockpile for the Golden Knights, who already have the No. 6 overall pick in this year's entry draft.
What might the Las Vegas Golden Knights look like this fall? "We're really well-prepared for it, and as you know, we've had an entire year to prepare for both of these drafts, and we are prepared and organized and that's why I feel a little more relaxed up here than I anticipated I would be at this time".
Washington isn't the only team that might see a talented player plucked from its roster for nothing. Those 30 teams have already revealed their protected lists - players that the Golden Knights can not select.
Canes general manager Ron Francis said Friday that he has had conversations with McPhee, although noting, "Probably not as much as other teams have had".
Among those left unprotected, and available to the Golden Knights in the draft, were goalies Cam Ward and Eddie Lack, forwards Lee Stempniak and Joakim Nordstrom, and defenseman Klas Dahlbeck. I have shutdown guys in Methot and Johnson and potential power-play d-men in Alzner and Scandella, who checked in with an 11-goal season three years ago. Those selections will be announced Wednesday night during the NHL Awards show in Last Vegas.
This morning at 10 am Eastern Time, the NHL revealed each of the 30 teams unprotected lists for the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft and social media exploded. They only need a couple, and theres opportunities for trades from that perspective. "When we call managers back we're basically saying, 'Do you want to hear what's going on with your team or are you just content to sit and we're going to do what we're going to do?' majority want to talk about it, and then we tell them exactly what's going on and, 'Is there something you want to do about it or not?'"
