Edmonton's Connor McDavid wins first Hart Trophy as NHL MVP

A 14-game points streak highlighted his second-year campaign, which featured an even 30 goals to go along with 70 assists, and ensured his capture of the Art Ross Trophy as the league's leading points scorer. The heavily bearded big man with an aggressive offensive game scored 76 points to lead all defensemen.

Ted Lindsay Award (MVP as voted by players): Connor McDavid.

McDavid also won the Ted Lindsay Award, given to the league's most outstanding performer in a vote of his fellow players. Nobody else in the league can mix high speed and elite playmaking ability like McDavid, who is a shining example of the NHL's emphasis on quickness and skill.

Selke Trophy (best defensive forward): Patrice Bergeron.

Columbus' Sergei Bobrovsky has won his second Vezina Trophy as the NHL's top goalie.

Bergeron joined Bob Gainey as the only players to win the Selke four times.

While Crosby didn't claim the Hart, the back-to-back Stanley Cup champion won the Richard Trophy as the NHL's top goal-scorer.

Still just 20 years old, McDavid left his mark on the 2016-17 season in a big way.

Poile was recognized after the Predators' first Western Conference title and Stanley Cup Final appearance.

"I really think that those two kids, Auston and Connor - both No. 1 picks overall - they've accepted their responsibility and their role, not only to the teams, but to the league", Gretzky said hours before Matthews' Leafs topped McDavid's Oilers in overtime on the first of November.

But Vegas' hometown team is in the spotlight for the first time this year, reaching a major milestone in its process of becoming the NHL's 31st franchise - and doing it during a heat wave. The American coach also won the Adams award in 2004.

"I think it's going to be great", Matthews said.

The hockey world will know the results of general manager George McPhee's machinations over the next few days, although numerous reports already have leaked out through the teams giving up players to the Golden Knights.

The Edmonton Oilers superstar captain won the Hart Trophy in a landslide over Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby and Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Wednesday night at the NHL Awards. "I'm excited to play against him".

Russian Bobrovsky did not leave the awards ceremony empty-handed, though, as he was named the Vezina Trophy victor as the league's best goalie for the second time in four years.

Burns beat out Ottawa's Erik Karlsson, who scored 71 points.

The Vegas Golden Knights' expansion draft also is part of the show.
