USA says it shot down Iranian-made drone in Syria

"Due to the high rate of speed, the poor control Russian the pilot had over his aircraft during the intercept, the aircraft commander of the RC-135 determined it to be unsafe". The U.S. has conducted three airstrikes over the past month against those forces.

Russia scrambled a Su-27 fighter to intercept a target over neutral Baltic waters, the target turned out to be USA reconnaissance aircraft Boeing RC-135, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement Tuesday.

An armed Russian jet came within five feet of a US reconnaissance plane over the Baltic Sea, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

The incident took place 25 miles northwest of the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, which is located between Lithuania and Poland in northern Europe.

That is where USA forces have been training and advising local Syrian Arabs for the fight against Islamic State militants. The bombs were so close the USA sent an F-18 to shoot down the Syrian jet - the first time that's happened during the Syrian civil war. Washington and Moscow are backing different sides in Syria's civil war, which has dragged on for more than six years.

A US F-15E fighter jet shot down a pro-Syrian regime drone near At Tanf, Syria, on Monday, two United States officials told CNN, the third downing of a pro-regime aircraft this month.

That took place near the Syrian city of Taqba, which has been the focus of fighting as US -sponsored ground forces advance on the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa.

It's not known how many USA crew members were on the plane.

Sunday's downing of a Syrian fighter jet led Russia's Defense Ministry to declare that it will track any USA or other coalition partner aircraft in Syria that fly west of the Euphrates River.
