MedStar Washington Hospital Center Director of Trauma Dr. Jack Sava leaves a news conference in Washington, Friday, June 16, 2017, about the condition of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of La. who was shot in Alexandria, Va., Wednesday, June 14, 2017, during a congressional baseball practice. Because the bullet shattered, there may be hundreds of fragments in Scalise's body and doctors do not intend to try to remove them all, Sava said.
Also suffering relatively minor injuries were two Capitol Police officers, David Bailey and Crystal Griner, and House GOP aide Zack Barth.
Gunman James Hodgkinson, from Belleville, Illinois, a home inspector, died after officers in Mr Scalise's security detail fired back at him.
"Tonight we're all Team Scalise", House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said at Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game.

But he recorded a message that played at the top of the game, paying tribute to Rep. Steve Scalise, who remains in critical condition following a shooting attack on the Republicans practicing for the game Wednesday morning. Sava said he was able to respond to family members while still under sedation, but that Scalise will have to remain in the hospital for "a considerable period of time", including for further operations and rehabilitation.
For now, Scalise remains in critical condition in the hospital's intensive care unit.
He was fielding at second base while practising for the event when he was shot in the hip and sustained serious injuries as the bullet travelled through his pelvis and injured internal organs.
Scalise has endured more than one surgery since then and his doctors expect that more are in the offing as they ensure the congressman does not have an infection as a result of the gunshot wounds. But she says he sold items from his business and told her he was going to Washington.
She also says she didn't want to discuss her husband's politics.
The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP.
A Washington Metropolitan Police Department report says the officer was manning a traffic checkpoint when the driver failed to obey repeated orders to stop.
Authorities say they are examining a cell phone, a computer and a camera found inside a white van where the gunman who wounded a top Republican congressman and several others had been living.
On Wednesday, the hospital said "sustained a single rifle shot to the left hip".
The attack cast a pall over Washington Wednesday, but leaders of both major parties vowed to return to business Thursday, and the annual congressional baseball game went on as scheduled that night.
Representative Steve Scalise, a member of the House Republican leadership, underwent more surgery Saturday, according to officials at the hospital in the nation's capital where he was admitted after Wednesday's attack on a sports field in nearby Virginia. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation and did so only on condition of anonymity. Hodgkinson had arrests in his background but showed required firearms licenses to an IL deputy who confronted him about shooting a cornfield last spring.
