Scalise, 51, and four others were wounded when an IL man opened fire Wednesday morning on the team practice in Alexandria.
The shooter was identified as James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old home inspector from IL who had several minor run-ins with the law in recent years and belonged to a Facebook group called "Terminate the Republican Party".
Republicans and Democrats joined in friendly rivalry Thursday at their annual Congressional Baseball game, all counting themselves as members of Team Scalise in honor of their grievously wounded colleague.
On Wednesday, he underwent immediate surgery after the incident and then an additional procedure to stop bleeding. "I think that his risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in. he was as critical as you can be when he came in".
The doctors said that while Scalise remains in critical condition, they "are encouraged by improvement in his condition".
Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and critically injured and remained hospitalised.
Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run". His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.
"My dear friend Steve Scalise took a bullet for all of us", Trump said. "That's the source of unity, and more than ever we must embrace it, so on this special night, I leave you with three great American words that for generations have torn down barriers, built bridges of unity, and defied those who have sought to pull us apart".
The shooting occurred at a popular park and baseball complex in Alexandria, Virginia, across the Potomac River from Washington, where Republican lawmakers and others were gathered for a morning practice about 7 a.m.
Ahead of the medical update, Scalise's chief of staff read a statement from the congressman's wife, Jennifer, who thanked people ― including President Donald Trump ― for their support.
"Trump also adds, as he's said previously, that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday".
The FBI and Alexandria Police Department said in a joint statement Thursday that federal authorities had examined the rifle and handgun recovered from the scene and determined that Hodgkinson had bought them from licensed sellers.
